Issue: How to fix ‘Virtual Memory Too Low’ error
Recently, I’ve started seeing “Virtual Memory Too Low” error displayed on my screen and the system seems to be slower than usual. What can be done in order to get rid of this error and enhance my system performance?
There are so many computer errors that you might encounter when working with your computer. One of more annoying errors is “Virtual Memory Too Low”. We will now explain how this error occurs and how to fix it.
First of all, let’s discuss what virtual memory is. It is also called page file or swap file. It’s a file on your hard disk used by Windows next to the physical memory (RAM), when it is needed. Let’s say you run a program and RAM cannot process it alone so virtual memory comes to the rescue. Virtual memory is usually 1.5 times bigger than the physical memory. For example, if RAM is 512MB, then virtual memory will be 768 MB. So if this error occurs, it means two things: either you don’t have enough RAM on your system, or a program on your computer is corrupted and causing a memory leak.
How to fix ‘Virtual Memory Too Low’ error manually
If you don’t have enough RAM on your system, you will simply need to add more physical memory. However, if you cannot do it instantly, increase the size of the page file. Just follow these instructions:
1. Right-click on Computer and go to Properties;
2. Select Advanced tab (Advanced system settings on Windows 7 or Vista) and go to Settings in the Performance section.
3. In the new window, go the the Advanced tab.
4. Locate the Virtual memory section and press the Change button.
5. Click on System managed size option or change the size of the page file manually.
6. Click OK.
However, if the error occurrs because of a corrupted application, you will first need to find out which specific program is causing the problem. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and go to the Processes tab. Click View and Select Columns. Locate Virtual Memory Size checkbox and click OK. This way, you will be able to see how much of the virtual memory the application is using. If you click on the name of this column two times, it will sort the processes on the basis of how much virtual memory you are using from the largest to smallest. You will now see which process uses the largest amount of virtual memory.
See what’s running the process. If you are not that familiar with the processes and what they do, download a program called Process Explorer. You won’t need to install it, just run the .exe file. Open this program and press View and then Select Columns. Then go to Process Memory tab and select Virtual Size checkbox once more and press OK. Now sort the results and see more information about the processes.
When the program is located, you can now fix it. First of all, you might try to update it. It usually does the trick. If this option does not work, reinstall it. If this is also to no avail, contact the customer support or leave it to a specialized tool.
