Issue: How to Recover a Deleted File?

Please help ASAP!! I’ve accidentally removed the entire folder of photos and did not notice that at first. To say in advance, I’ve also emptied the recycle bin. Is it possible to recover deleted files somehow?

Solved Answer

Deleted File snapshotWe assume that the majority of the users went through such experience. It’s very easy to delete files or entire folders containing important data accidentally since it requires only two steps. To prevent loss of important data, we always recommend making file backups, which is not a difficult thing to do. If, however, you have removed the entire folder, emptied the Recycle Bin, and has no backup for the lost data, then you are in a small trouble. Nevertheless, it’s possible to recover a deleted files and we will try to explain how this can be done.

How to Recover a Deleted File manually

In the case of the user who have submitted the question, this method will not work. Nevertheless, other users, first of all, should start from checking whether the missing file is completely gone from the system. In order to do that, you should open a Recycle Bin folder. You can a search box and can even sort deleted files according to the deletion date. If the search box informs that no items match your search, then try to look through all files one by one in case you are typing a wrong file name. If you find a missing file in the Recycle Bin, click on it and select ‘Restore‘. However, it has been found that programs, such as CCleaner, can prevent you from recovering data from the Recycle Bin.

If you have emptied the Recycle Bin before missing that particular file or if you are not sure whether you have deleted it, then open ‘Start menu’ and enter a file name in the search box. That may help in case you’ve accidentally moved the file from one location to another. By the way, try to remember whether you have stored a missing file in a cloud storage service (Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, etc.). In case you have and removed it some time before, try to log into your account and check the recycle bin there because cloud storages tend to keep deleted files for a long time.

Besides, don’t forget to check your backups. If you have ever copied data from your computer to USB external hard drive, CD, DVD, or another external storage., make sure that the file you are looking for is not there.

In addition to that, it’s possible that Windows has created a backup of your file since Windows 7’s versions tend to initiate backup service without setting such a request manually. If you want to check that, then you should open the location where the missing files was kept, right-click on it and select ‘Restore previous versions’. In case you notice the file that has been accidentally removed, click ‘Open’ and you will be redirected to the file’s location. Unfortunately, that’s not possible if you’re using Windows 8, unless you have enabled ‘File History’ manually.

If after all you did not recover a deleted file, then the only thing that you can do is to recover it automatically using a file recovery tool.
