msvcr110.dll not found: put the Visual C++ 2012 runtime back with Microsoft's own installers
msvcr110.dll belongs to Microsoft Visual C++ 2012. Any program compiled with Visual Studio 2012 looks for it by that exact name when it starts, and neither Windows nor a newer Visual C++ package provides it. You fix the error by installing, or repairing, the Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable from Microsoft, in both builds on a 64-bit PC.
Prefer to fix it yourself? The manual steps follow.
Download msvcr110.dll the official way
11.0.51106.1Get the Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable, Update 4, which carries msvcr110.dll version 11.0.51106.1. Update 4 is the final release of the 2012 runtime. The installer writes msvcr110.dll, the C++ library msvcp110.dll and four more 2012 files into the Windows folders and records them, so Windows can repair or remove them later as one package.
A 64-bit PC needs the x86 package as well as the x64 one. A 32-bit program reads only the 32-bit msvcr110.dll, and many programs built with Visual Studio 2012 are 32-bit. If you install only x64, those programs keep reporting the file as missing.
Pick “DLL files only” when a program expects the runtime in its own folder, or when the installer refuses to run on a PC. The ZIP holds msvcr110.dll, msvcp110.dll and the other Visual C++ 2012 libraries, version 11.0.51106.1, extracted from Microsoft's installer and left exactly as they were. Downloading needs a free uGetFix account. Sign in or register, it takes about a minute, and you return to this page.
We took these two installers from Microsoft's server on October 14, 2026 and extracted every file inside. The download pages list the size and SHA-256 checksum of what we found, so you can match your download against it. Both links point to download.microsoft.com, the Update 4 packages that Microsoft lists for Visual C++ 2012.

Step by step
- Look for the 2012 package first. Go to Settings, Apps, Installed apps and search for “2012”. A complete setup shows two lines, “Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x64)” and the same name with (x86). Entries for 2013 or 2015-2022 are other runtimes and do not hold msvcr110.dll.
- One or both are missing: install them. Download the x64 and the x86 installer above and run each one. On 32-bit Windows you need only x86. Restart the PC if the installer says so, then open the program again.
- Both are listed: run the installers anyway, then repair. Running the Update 4 installers over an older 2012 build brings it up to 11.0.51106.1. If the installer reports that the same version is already there, go back to Installed apps, open the menu beside each 2012 entry, choose Modify and then Repair. The files are rewritten; your programs and settings stay as they are.
- The error comes from a game: use the files it shipped with. Games often bring the Visual C++ 2012 installers in a subfolder such as _CommonRedist, Redist or Support. Run the x64 and x86 vcredist files from there, or let the game launcher verify the installation, which runs those installers again.
- Only one program fails: check its own folder. A program can carry a private msvcr110.dll beside its .exe. Windows tries that copy before the one in the Windows folder, so a broken or wrong-build copy there wins. Reinstall that program, or remove the bad copy once the redistributable is installed.
- It still fails: compare the wording. A file that “was not found”, one that “is either not designed to run on Windows” and the 0xc000007b code are three separate faults. The error messages section shows which fix each one needs.
What not to do
Skip the sites that hand out msvcr110.dll as a single file.
Nothing tells you which build or architecture you received, the companion msvcp110.dll is missing, and Windows cannot update or repair a file it never installed. A single file that matches no Microsoft release can also carry altered code. For a program that needs loose files, use “DLL files only” above, and test any copy you already have with the checker below.
Do not count on Visual C++ 2015-2022 or 2013 to cover it.
Each Visual C++ release has its own file names: vcruntime140.dll for 2015-2022, msvcr120.dll for 2013, msvcr110.dll for 2012. A program asks for exactly one of these and ignores the rest. The packages sit next to each other without conflict, and a PC with programs of different ages often needs all three.
Do not paste the file into System32 or SysWOW64 yourself.
Windows has no record of a hand-placed file, so the 2012 installer may skip it during a repair. Put a 32-bit msvcr110.dll into System32 on a 64-bit PC and every 64-bit program that loads it stops with 0xc000007b.
Do not register it with regsvr32.
regsvr32 is for COM components. msvcr110.dll is a plain runtime library with no registration function, so the command fails with an error of its own and fixes nothing.
Leave the private copies in program folders alone.
Search the disk and you may find msvcr110.dll in several program and game folders. Those programs put them there on purpose; delete one and that program no longer starts.
Check the copy on your PC
Select the msvcr110.dll you have. Your browser calculates its checksums and compares them with 10 known builds: the final Visual C++ 2012 files from Microsoft, the copy found in Windows images and the older versions seen on PCs.
Your file is not uploaded. The checksum is calculated on your computer.
Is the copy you found in Downloads, Temp, AppData or beside a program you never installed? Then the question is whether it is genuine, not how to replace it. Is msvcr110.dll genuine or malware? Read the 2-Spyware page
What each msvcr110.dll error message tells you
Windows words the error differently depending on what went wrong. The texts below are copied as Windows shows them.

The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCR110.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
Windows 10 and 11 show this when no msvcr110.dll of the program's architecture exists anywhere Windows looks. Reinstalling the program helps only if it bundles the 2012 runtime. Install the Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 packages, x64 and x86.
The program can't start because MSVCR110.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
The Windows 7 and 8 text for the same fault. Install both 2012 packages.
MSVCR110.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
Windows did find a copy but could not load it. The file is corrupt, cut short, or built for the other architecture, which is what usually happens after a manual copy. Repair the 2012 package and delete any odd copy beside the program's .exe.
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application.
An architecture mix-up: a 64-bit program met the 32-bit msvcr110.dll, or a 32-bit program met the 64-bit one. Look for a copy you or a download put in System32 or in the program's folder, remove it, and install both packages from Microsoft.
Faulting module name: MSVCR110.dll
You find this line in Event Viewer, Windows Logs, Application, after a program closed by itself. The file loaded fine and the crash happened inside it. Install Update 4 so the runtime is at 11.0.51106.1; if the program still crashes, the fault is in the program, so update or reinstall it.

On 64-bit Windows the installer places the x64 file in C:\Windows\System32 and the x86 file in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. The names are back to front for historical reasons: System32 is the 64-bit folder. 32-bit Windows has no SysWOW64 and keeps the x86 file in System32.

What msvcr110.dll itself depends on
The import table of a DLL names the other libraries Windows must load before it can run. For the official msvcr110.dll that list has one entry, KERNEL32.dll, a core file present on every Windows PC. The 2012 runtime predates the Universal C Runtime, so it does not need any of the api-ms-win-crt files either.
That means a fresh error after msvcr110.dll is in place points to its neighbours, not to its own needs. C++ programs also ask for msvcp110.dll, and some use vcomp110.dll for OpenMP parallel code or vcamp110.dll for C++ AMP. The 2012 redistributable installs all six runtime files together, which is why it ends the chain of “next missing file” errors that single downloads start.
KERNEL32.dllKERNEL32.dll is part of Windows and is updated only by Windows Update. Do not download or replace it.

Older msvcr110.dll versions found on PCs
Many programs drop their own msvcr110.dll during setup and leave it there for good. A public DLL catalogue lists 7 of these copies, version 11.0.50214.1 up to 11.0.51106.1, and the table shows the checksums of each so you can match your file.
Update 4 installs 11.0.51106.1, the final 2012 build. When the check on this page matches your file to this list, it is probably an earlier Microsoft build, but the list is not verified, so look at the Microsoft signature too. Then install the redistributable: programs use the file in System32 or SysWOW64 unless they keep a copy in their own folder.

Questions people ask
I already have Visual C++ 2013 and 2015-2022. Why does msvcr110.dll still fail?
Because neither of them contains it. msvcr110.dll is version 11 of the runtime and comes only with the Visual C++ 2012 redistributable. The 2013 package installs msvcr120.dll and the 2015-2022 package installs vcruntime140.dll. A program built with Visual Studio 2012 asks for msvcr110.dll by name, so install the 2012 Update 4 packages next to the others, in x64 and x86.
Visual C++ 2012 is out of support. Should I still install it?
Yes, if a program needs it. Microsoft lists the 2012 runtime as no longer supported, which means it gets no more fixes, yet the Update 4 installers are still on Microsoft's server and are signed by Microsoft. Use those rather than an older 2012 installer that came with a program, so you end up with the final build.
Do I need msvcr110.dll or msvcp110.dll?
Usually both. msvcr110.dll provides the C functions: memory, files, text and maths. msvcp110.dll adds the C++ Standard Library on top of it. Whichever file the error names, the 2012 redistributable installs the two of them at once, so the fix is the same.
Does Windows come with msvcr110.dll?
Not as a runtime for your programs. Winbindex records one build, 11.00.60605.1, inside some Windows 10 and Windows 11 images, but it does not say where that copy is placed, and a program that reports the file missing has clearly not found it. The Visual C++ 2012 redistributable is what puts msvcr110.dll where programs look.
Can I take msvcr110.dll from another PC?
It works only if you copy the right build into the right place, and you skip the companion files and the repair record. Running the two Microsoft installers takes the same time and avoids both problems. If a program needs the files in its own folder, take them from “DLL files only” on this page, where every checksum is listed.
Could a msvcr110.dll be malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft library signed by Microsoft. Attackers have put fake files with this name next to trusted programs, so test your copy with the checker on this page and see the 2-Spyware page linked above for the security side.
Is msvcr110.dll safe to delete?
No. Deleting it, or uninstalling the 2012 redistributable, stops every program that relies on the shared Visual C++ 2012 runtime from opening. The file is under 1 MB, so removing it saves almost no space.
