on Windows

I’ve recently installed Windows 10 from scratch. Besides, I’ve installed all available updates and several programs that have been lost while installing Windows. A couple of days after that, I’ve noticed doubtful pop-ups on my web browser. These pop-ups report an “Error Code: 154-247-087” and state that the system has some security breaches. I’m using Windows Defender AV. Should I be worrying?

PC security experts started spreading a warning related to the Error Code: 154-247-087 pop-ups in the beginning of 2017. Many people have been deceived and fall for believing that their PCs have some critical security vulnerabilities, which can be fixed by calling for customer support. We say ‘deceived’ because 154-247-087 pop-ups have been invented by hackers and used as a tool for profit making, as well as malware spreading. According to malware specialists, these pop-ups belong to the Tech-Support-Scam category of malware and should NEVER be trusted.

Usually, people’s web browsers are redirected to a separate page, which contains Error Code 154-247-087 alert. The URLs of the page are altered, but, usually, they include the names like “amazon,” “ebay,” “support,” “Microsoft,” etc. and a set of random letters and numbers. The message freezes the screen and contains intimidating information about what kind of user’s personal information is at the risk. For instance, personal emails, bank credentials, other passwords, credit card information, documents, photos, and so on. To prevent identity theft, the user is urged to call “Windows Certified Tech Support,” which is yet another false claim. The telephone number (0-800-098-8052) provided on the pop-up DOES NOT belong to Microsoft engineers. It’s owned by scammers who may try to trick you into installing doubtful software or provide information to gain remote access to your PC.

Usually, Error Code 154-247-087 ads start showing up in a web browser after installation of third-party software. That may be a download manager, VPN manager, office pack, media player, a game or any other program downloaded from a doubtful third-party source. That’s because these pop-ups are triggered by an ad-supported program, so-called adware. Having this in mind, it’s very important to treat 154-247-087 error alert as a serious sign that your PC needs a professional maintenance, but we don’t mean that you should call the given number. We mean that you should scan your PC with a professional anti-malware, for example, [d1] and remove adware from the system. Unfortunately, but malware removal is not sufficient to fix Error Code 154-247-087 pop-ups permanently. You should also reset your web browsers and we will explain how to do that.

Step 1. Remove malware

To block 154-247-087 pop-ups, you have to remove an ad-supported program from your PC. The most reliable way to do that is to perform a thorough scan with a professional anti-malware, for example [d1]. Nevertheless, malware can also be eliminated manually, but since you may not know which program is responsible for displaying fake ads, manual 154-247-087 adware removal is considered a risk. In case you opt for manual removal instructions, here's what you have to do:

1. Open the list of programs that have been recently installed. For this purpose, navigate to:
   Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > Add/Remove Programs (Windows 7, XP).
   Right-click on Win key > select Control Panel > Uninstall a Program (Windows 8, 10).
2. Carefully check what programs have been recently installed. The best way to do that is to sort the programs by date. Select unknown programs and click Uninstall. To confirm the removal, click OK/Uninstall.

Step 2. Reset web browsers

Google Chrome

1. Open Google Chrome and then look for a Menu button (three bars located in the top right corner). Click it, select Tools on a drop-down menu and click Extensions.
2. Locate suspicious browser extensions and click on the trash icon placed next to them. Confirm the removal by clicking Remove.
3. Click Menu button again and select Settings.
4. Scroll down and find Show advanced settings option.
5. Open Advanced settings and find Reset settings button. Read all information provided on the notification and, if you agree with all conditions, click Reset.

Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Mozilla Firefox. Find Menu button (three bars) and click it.
2. Open Add-ons section and open Extensions tab.
3. Locate suspicious add-ons or extensions click Remove button next to each of them.
4. Click Menu button again, then on "?" button and then select Troubleshooting Information.
5. Click on Refresh Firefox on the right pane.
6. To confirm the changes, click Refresh Firefox again.

Internet Explorer

1. Click on Gear icon at the top right corner of the screen and select Manage Add-ons.
2. Find all suspicious add-ons and extensions, Right-click on them and select Disable.
3. Then click on Gear icon again and select Internet Options.
4. Click Advanced and select Reset.
5. Mark Delete Personal Settings box and then click Reset to confirm the changes.
