So finally I received a Windows 10 Fall Creators Update on Windows Update on Settings, but it did not install. The download was preparing for more than an hour and then the installation process started. Then it got stuck at 79% with the error code 0x80d02002.
Is there something I could do to install the update successfully? I haven’t tried to run it again yet.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update release is rolling out slowly and devices that passed the requirements have already received the automatic update on Settings -> Update and Security. The part of users got a notification on the lower-right corner of the desktop saying “Windows feature update. It’s ready to install, etc.”

The others checked for available updates on Windows Update section and found out that the Feature update[ref en-1] to Windows 10, version 1709 is available.

Even if you are impatient to install the update, don’t rush to rejoice because the installation may fail with a multitude of errors. Recently, a couple of Windows 10 users reported that the installation of the Fall Creators Update keeps failing with an error code 0x80d02002.

Most of the sources recommend fixing the 0x80d02002 error by resetting Windows Update Components. However, we are pretty sure that this method won’t work. If you opt for trying, we’ll provide the guide at the end of this post.

The 0x80d02002 is one of the compatibility errors because its emergence is directly related to incompatible apps or drivers. Fixing Compatibility Error 0x80d02002 When Installing Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

There are two solutions for fixing the 0x80d02002 error, i.e. to uninstall incompatible apps or update/uninstall the problematic driver.

The problem is that Windows Update service does not provide explicit information about the problem. People are provided with an error code and offered to search the Internet for relevant information. However, there’s not much information about this bug on the web and you will definitely not find the list of incompatible apps.

To find out if the culprit of unsuccessful installation is the driver or application, you can use the Media Creation Tool. It should also end up with the 0x80d02002 error, but it will indicate the problematic application or driver, which should be fixed.

Solution 1. Update or uninstall the driver

If Media Creation Tool[ref en-3] revealed that the Graphics Card Driver is the reason why the Fall Creators Update cannot be installed, you should update it to the latest version available:

  • Right-click on Windows key and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Display Adapters section and click on your Graphics Card driver.
  • Select Update driver.

  • Then open Apps & features from the left pane.
  • Carefully analyze the list of installed apps and remove the ones you think are not suitable.
  • For that, click on the app’s entry and select Uninstall.
