How to fix keyboard not working at login

When the keyboard does not respond at the login screen, Windows cannot accept the credentials you need to continue. The problem can appear before the desktop loads, so the normal path into the system is blocked even though the keyboard may work later.

Several causes can lead to that behavior. The keyboard may not be detected correctly at sign-in, the device connection may not be ready early enough, or Windows may need a different input path before the user session starts.

The login screen is the point where Windows accepts your sign-in details and hands control to the user session, so input problems there affect access before the desktop appears. Here are 4 solutions to fix keyboard not working at login.

Fix 1. Try the on-screen keyboard

This gives you a direct way to enter your password when the physical keyboard is not responding yet.

  • At the login screen, select Ease of access.
  • Choose On-Screen Keyboard.
  • Click the password field.
  • Enter your credentials with the on-screen keys.
  • Sign in to Windows.

Fix 2. Reconnect the keyboard

A fresh connection can help when Windows has not detected the keyboard correctly at the login stage.

  • Unplug the keyboard from the computer.
  • Wait a moment.
  • Plug the keyboard back in firmly.
  • Try typing at the login screen again.

Fix 3. Use a different USB port

Moving the keyboard to another port can help if the current connection is not available early in startup.

  • Remove the keyboard from its current USB port.
  • Insert it into another USB port.
  • Wait for Windows to recognize the device.
  • Return to the login screen and test the keys.

Fix 4. Restart the computer

A restart can clear a temporary startup problem that keeps the keyboard from responding at sign-in.

  • Use the power controls on the sign-in screen.
  • Select Restart.
  • Wait for Windows to load again.
  • Test the keyboard at the login screen.
