I can't update Windows. At least, I think that's the case. The message in settings is "You're not up to date. Your device is missing important security and quality fixes." But if I try to click "Check for updates," there's nothing (i.e., no updates are discovered and installed). I'm a bit at a loss, then. I'm using Windows 11.

Windows Update is designed to ensure that your system remains secure, stable, and equipped with the latest features. Typically, it checks for updates automatically and installs them when available. However, some users encounter an issue where Windows displays a "You're not up to date. Your device is missing important security and quality fixes" message, even though no updates are available when they check manually. This misleading notification can be confusing and may indicate an underlying problem with Windows Update.

Why Windows says "You're not up to date"

This issue can occur due to various reasons. One common cause is a temporary glitch in Windows Update that prevents it from recognizing the latest installed updates. Corrupted update components or cache files may also interfere with the update system, causing Windows to display incorrect information. Some users experience this problem when a required update has failed to install properly, leaving Windows in a state where it believes updates are still pending.

User experiences

Many users report seeing the "You're not up to date" message even after performing multiple manual checks for updates. Some notice that their update history shows recent installations, yet Windows insists that they are outdated. Others find that restarting their system does not resolve the issue, leading to further confusion.

Addressing the problem

Resolving "You're not up to date" error involves refreshing the Windows Update system. One of the simplest reasons for this is that the metered connection is on - disabling it could resolve the problem.

Cleaning the update cache can potentially reset Windows Update and cause it to rescan for updates. Running the Windows Update troubleshooter can also catch and fix underlying problems. Resetting Windows update components can be another solution if this is still not working.

For more extensive update-related problems, using the [d1] repair utility will resolve corrupted update files, registries, and other system issues that might be hindering Windows from accurately perceiving its update status.

  • Type Services in Windows search box and press Enter.
  • Locate Windows Update Service.
  • If it is already running, right-click and select Restart.

  • Type cmd in Windows search.

  • User Account Control (UAC) will ask whether you want to allow changes - click Yes.

    sfc /scannow
  • Next, use the following commands, pressing Enter each time:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

(Note: if you get an error executing this last command, add /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess to it and try again).
  • Reboot your computer.

Fix 6. Ensure you are not on the metered connection

Windows may not download updates if your network is set as metered, leading to the "You're not up to date" message. Disabling this setting allows updates to install properly.

  • Open Settings and go to Network & Internet.
  • Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet (depending on your active connection).
  • Click on your currently connected network.
  • Scroll down and find the Metered connection option.
  • If it is enabled, toggle it Off.
  • Restart your PC and check for updates again.

Fix 7. Check date and time settings

Incorrect date and time settings can prevent Windows from syncing properly with Microsoft’s update servers. Ensuring they are correct can resolve the issue.

  • Type in Control Panel in Windows search and press Enter.
  • Go to Clock and Region and click on Date and Time.
  • Pick the Internet Time tab and select Change Settings.
  • Make sure that the Synchronize with an Internet time server box is ticked.
  • Click Update now and OK.
