Lots of people encounter a minor, but very irritating error after upgrading to Windows 10. Once Windows 10 is installed from zero or upgraded from earlier versions, the user can’t set preferred web browser as a default, which is why Microsoft Edge is launched each time when clicking on a random link while browsing. In fact, the user is stuck with an unwanted web browser because no matter how many times he/she tries to set Chrome, Firefox, Safari or another web browser by default, these settings are not saved due to new Settings app issues.

So, how to set a default web browser in Windows 10 Anniversary Update?

When you are not sure if your Windows system has some problems, it’s always recommended to check it with reputable software first and only then perform some fixes manually. Thus, as soon as you start noticing that despite the fact how many times you set Chrome as your default browser, but Edge appears instead, run a scan with [d1], [rev id=”RegCure Pro”] or [rev id=”SpeedyPC Pro”] and see if any errors are found. If there are , let the program fix them automatically.

Furthermore, to set a default web browser on Windows 10, you have two options, which we will explain down below.

Open Control Panel and set default programs there

The problem why you can’t change a default web browser is related to the new Setting app, which is not saving the changes. Thus, you have to do that manually via Control Panel:

  1. Right-Click on Windows key and select Control Panel.
  2. Here find and click on View by (top right) and select Large icons.
  3. Navigate to Default Programs and select Set your default programs.
  4. On the left pane, select a web browser that you prefer using and click on Set this program as default.

Switch MS account

In case this default web browser did not help, then try another solution, which is to switch MS account.

In some rare cases, MS account that is in connection with your PC does not have the permission to change default apps on Windows. In this case, one of the solutions would be to switch MS account with someone else’s.

NOTE: be very careful with this solution because it will remove all your settings and PC personalization. That’s why this option is not recommended applying.

In case you want to fix a default web browser issue using this method, you have to do the following:

  1. Press Windows key. When Start menu appears, type Settings.
  2. Once Settings are open, navigate to Accounts - Email & app accounts and find the email address of your account.
  3. Opt for Manage button to open Account settings.
  4. Here select Delete Account and restart the device.
  5. As soon as it is booted, navigate to Settings – Accounts -Email & app accounts - Add an account.
  6. Enter the preferred account (not the same you have deleted).

Hopefully, now you can set a default web browser on Windows 10. If these fixes weren’t helpful for you, please let us know so that we could improve on this particular issue. Thanks!
