I’ve upgraded to Windows 10 and the sounds stopped playing. There are no sounds absolutely, including default Windows sounds. What could have happened?

Many Windows users have already upgraded to Windows 10 and got accustomed to it. Even those who haven’t tried this version must have heard about its features and innovations unless they are living on the moon. Therefore, we will not expatiate about Windows 10 characteristics on this post. We would like to address this post to Windows users who have encountered sound problems after upgrading from earlier Windows versions to Windows 10.

People reported many sound problems after upgrading to Windows 10 or after upgrading Windows 10 Anniversary Update to Creators Update. For example, some users experienced static sound in headphones, delayed Bluetooth speakers’ sounds while playing music, sounds are interrupted or no sounds at all. In most of the cases, no sounds issue on Windows 10 is triggered by corrupted/outdated/incompatible audio driver (Realtek High Definition (HD) Audio Driver) or faulty sound configuration. If you are encountering any problems related to sounds on Windows 10, please try the following fixes:

Modify Speakers’ Properties

  • Right-click on the sound icon located on the toolbar.
  • Select Playback devices.
  • Open Playback tab and select the default speaker.
  • Open Properties and click on Advanced tab.
  • Change the sample rate and bit depth under Default Format.
  • Click Apply and OK to save the changes.

Run Audio Troubleshooter

  • Open Windows search and type Troubleshooting.
  • Click on the first search result and select Hardware and Sounds.
  • Then select the required troubleshooter and launch it.

Restart Audio Services

  • Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Find Windows Audio service. If it has been disabled, double-click it and select Start.
  • Then double-click on the service startup type and change it to Automatic.

Update Audio Device Drivers

  • Press Windows key + R to open Run dialog.
  • Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
  • OR right-click on Windows key and select Device Manager.
  • Expand the Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click on the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and select Update Driver Software.
  • After that, reboot your PC.

Reinstall Audio Device Drivers

  • Press Windows key + R to open Run dialog.
  • Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
  • OR right-click on Windows key and select Device Manager.
  • Expand the Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click on the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and select Uninstall.
  • If you are asked for a confirmation, mark the box next to Delete the driver software for this device and press OK.
  • Reboot your PC.
  • After that, open Device Manager as explained in the steps 1-3.
  • Expand the Sound, video and game controllers again.
  • Right-click on the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and click Scan for hardware changes.
  • If the system fails to detect the missing driver and install its latest version automatically, you’ll have to navigate to the official Realtek website and download the latest version of the Audio Driver corresponding with you Windows 10 type (32 or 64 bit).

Hopefully, these steps helped you to fix no sound issues on Windows 10. After all, make sure to optimize your PC properly. For this purpose, we would highly recommend using an automated tool, for example, [d1].

Bottom line

Frequently asked questions

Try updating your audio drivers through Device Manager or the manufacturer's website. Additionally, run the Windows Troubleshooter for sound problems to automatically detect and fix issues.

Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray, select 'Sounds,' go to the 'Playback' tab, and ensure your desired audio device is set as the default by clicking 'Set Default.'
