Question
Issue: How to optimize Windows 7 (part 2)
I’m using Windows 7 on my computer and recently it has become really slow. I try to kill unnecessary processes but it seems to be only a temporary solution. Is there anything else I can do to boost its performance?
Solved Answer
At the first part of this article, we’ve provided even 8 solutions that will enhance your system performance. However, there’s so much more you can do and we will discuss these additional options at the second part of the article.
9. Modify visual effects
There are some small adjustments of visual effects that will save some space on your computer.
Right-click on Computer. Select Properties. Press Advanced System Settings (and thus open System Properties window). Selected Advanced tab and press Settings in the Performance section. Select Custom options and Adjust for Best Performance and then select only the last four options. Restart your computer.
10.Turn off Windows 7 Screen Saver and Wallpaper
A simple and effective way to save some system memory is to disable your Wallpaper and Screen Saver. If you are willing to do this, follow these steps:
Right-click on the Desktop. Select Personalize. Click Screen Saver. In the Screen Saver drop-down menu, select None, press Apply and OK. Click on Desktop background. Select Location drop down menu and select Solid Colors. Pick one color and press OK.
11. Turn off gadgets and sidebar
Windows Sidebar can pop up can appear at the side of the desktop. It has mini icons of programs (called gadgets) like latest news headlines, weather report, a clock, etc. However, it’s a completely optional function which you can drop for the sake of your system’s performance.
Doing it is easy:
Go to Control Panel. Click on Programs. Go to Turn Windows features on or off and disable the gadgets. Here you go.
12. Modify the Search Indexing Feature in Win 7
Right-click on Computer on your desktop. Click on Manage and select Services and Applications in the Computer Management window. Click on Services. On the list, locate Windows Search. Right-click on Windows Search and choose Properties (you’ll now see Windows Search Properties Window). From Startup type click on the drop down menu and select Disabled. Press Apply and OK.
You’ve just disabled the Search Indexing Feature. If you don’t search for files on your system often, you can disable this feature and boost your system’s performance.
13. Install a useful software that will optimize Windows 7
Download and use a reliable optimizer at least once a week and your system will be on its best shape. For that you can choose from RegCure Pro or SpeedyPC Pro.
14. Adjust Power Plan to Maximum Performance
Maximum Performance is an optional mode of operation on Windows 7. By default, it applies the Balanced Performance mode which consumes the energy from your hardware. Switch the power plan to High Performance by following these instructions:
Go to Control Panel, double-click Power Options. Click the down arrow that says Show Additional Plans and activate High Performance power plan.
15. Use ReadyBoost option
This feature is available on Windows 7 and Windows Vista. It allows using USB flash drive as the secondary memory cache in order to increase your system performance. However, it cannot replace RAM. If you want to take advantage of this option, insert your flash drive and you’ll see a dialogue which will ask you whether you want to use ReadyBoost and offer the size to use, provided your drive meets certain criteria. If there’s no pop-up, it means that AutoPlay has been disabled. If this has happened, do the following:
Go to Computer, right-click on removable storage device. Choose Properties (if your drive meets certain conditions, you will see ReadyBoost here). Click it and select Use this device and the amount of space you will use. Then click OK and that will do the trick.
