Hello, I have recently migrated my operating system (Windows) from an HDD to an SSD on my PC, and since then I can no longer apply the updates. I receive the error which says: "Reinstall your current version of Windows to repair system files and components." Can you help?
"Reinstall your current version of Windows to repair system files and components" is a Windows 11 notice, not an error code: an update failed because system files or components are damaged. Selecting Reinstall now reinstalls the same Windows version and, according to Microsoft, keeps your apps, files and settings. Back up your files, plug the PC in and start there.
Select Reinstall now in the yellow notice, or open Settings > System > Recovery and select Reinstall now next to Fix problems using Windows Update (Fix 1). Windows downloads a repair copy of your current version and keeps apps, files and settings. Keep the PC plugged in and online. If the option is missing or the reinstall fails, repair with DISM and SFC (Fix 2) or run setup.exe from a Windows ISO (Fix 4).

| Where it appears | Settings > Windows Update, under an update that failed to install, often next to an install error such as 0x80070002. |
| Main cause | Microsoft: an update failed to install "because of problems related to system files or components". |
| Fastest fix | Select Reinstall now (Fix 1). It reinstalls the same Windows version and keeps apps, files and settings. |

What "Reinstall your current version of Windows to repair system files and components" means
Windows Update shows this yellow notice when an update failed to install and Windows believes the reason is damaged system files or components. Microsoft's support page describes it word for word: the message can appear on the Windows Update page in Settings after such a failure. It has no error code of its own.

The Reinstall now button in the notice opens the same tool you find in Settings > System > Recovery under Fix problems using Windows Update. Microsoft says this tool reinstalls the same version of Windows already on the PC, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files and settings.
| What you see | Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Reinstall your current version of Windows to repair system files and components | Settings > Windows Update, under the failed update | Windows found damaged system files or components and recommends a repair reinstall. |
| Install error with a code, for example 0x80070002 or 0x800700c1 | The line of the update above the notice | The update that failed. The code helps if the repair does not work. |
| Fix problems using Windows Update, Reinstall now | Settings > System > Recovery | The same repair, started by hand. It is there even when the notice is gone. |
| No Recovery option of this name | Settings > System > Recovery | A work or school PC, a PC with managed updates, or Windows older than 11 22H2. |
Windows downloads "a repair version of the last operating system update that was successfully installed" and installs it over the current system. Your Windows version stays the same. Nothing is erased, but back up your files first all the same: Back up your files (Windows Backup, File History, Time Machine).
Why Windows Update asks you to reinstall your current version
Microsoft names one trigger: an update that failed to install because of problems with system files or components. What damaged them differs from PC to PC. The list runs from the most common case to the rarest, and each line points to the fix that matches it.
| Cause | How often | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| A monthly update failed and left system files or the component store damaged. | Most often | Update history shows one or more failed updates with an install error. | Fix 1 |
| Damage in the component store that DISM can repair without a reinstall. | Often | DISM reports that the store is repairable, or SFC finds damaged files. | Fix 2 |
| The update download is damaged or drive C: is almost full. | Sometimes | The reinstall stops during the download, or Settings > System > Storage shows drive C: almost full. | Fix 3 |
| The Recovery option is missing or Windows Update cannot finish the repair. | Sometimes | No Reinstall now button, or the repair itself fails. | Fix 4 |
| Errors on the drive after a clone to a new SSD, a crash or a power cut. | Rarely | The notice appeared right after the drive change or a hard shutdown. | Fix 6 |
The reader above moved Windows from an HDD to an SSD. Microsoft does not list cloning as a cause, and we could not confirm that a missing partition triggers this notice. A clone that copied read errors from an old drive can leave damaged files, though, so check the new drive with Fix 6 if the repair does not hold.

How to fix "Reinstall your current version of Windows to repair system files and components"
Fix 1 is what Microsoft offers in the notice and helps most readers. Fix 2 and Fix 3 are quicker repairs for when the reinstall is not possible right now or fails during the download. Fix 4 does the same reinstall from a Windows ISO. Fix 5 and Fix 6 cover a single stubborn update and a damaged drive. Fix 7 removes your apps and is the last step.
| What you see or have | Start with |

Fix 1. Select Reinstall now to repair your current version of Windows
1 to 2 hoursLow riskEvery home PC with Windows 11 22H2 or later that shows the notice or has the Recovery option.
This is the repair the notice asks for. It replaces the damaged system files and components with a clean copy of the version you already run, so the failed update has an intact base to install on.
- Back up the files you cannot lose first: Back up your files (Windows Backup, File History, Time Machine).
- Connect the charger and use a stable internet connection. Microsoft makes both a condition for the whole reinstall.
- Select Reinstall now in the notice itself if you see it. It opens the same window as the steps below.
- Open Recovery in Settings. Open Settings > System > Recovery. Next to Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now. This keeps your apps, files and settings.

Fix problems using Windows Update reinstalls the current version and keeps apps, files and settings. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Start the reinstall. Choose whether the PC may restart on its own 15 minutes after the installation, then select OK.
- Wait and restart. Windows Update downloads and installs a repair copy of your current Windows version. Keep the PC plugged in and online, and restart it when asked.
These steps were written for Windows 11 22H2 and later. The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Reinstall Windows without losing files
In the Fix problems using Windows Update window you choose whether the PC may restart on its own 15 minutes after the installation. Leave it on if you will be away, so the repair finishes.
It worked if: Windows Update shows the repair download and install, the PC restarts into your normal desktop, and the notice is gone.
If not: If the download stops, go to Fix 3. If the option is missing, go to Fix 4.
Fix 2. Repair system files and components with DISM and SFC
15 to 40 minutesNo riskYou want a quick repair before the long reinstall, or Fix 1 cannot run on this PC.
The notice says system files and components are damaged. DISM repairs the component store from Windows Update, then SFC uses that store to replace damaged system files. Often that is enough for the failed update to install.
- Open an elevated command window. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin), or type cmd in the search box, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Select Yes when Windows asks for permission.

Search for cmd and choose Run as administrator. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Run DISM first. Type the command below and press Enter. DISM downloads clean copies of damaged components from Windows Update, so it can take several minutes. Wait until it says The operation completed successfully.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM /RestoreHealth running. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Run System File Checker. In the same window, type the command below and press Enter. Do not close the window until the verification reaches 100%.
sfc /scannow
sfc /scannow at 100%. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Read the result and restart. Compare the last message with the table below this guide, then restart the PC so that repaired files are loaded.

The result line tells you what SFC did. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2.
These steps were written for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Run DISM and SFC to repair Windows system files
After both scans, restart the PC and open Settings > Windows Update. Select Retry on the update that failed, or Check for updates.
It worked if: DISM ends with The operation completed successfully., SFC repairs files or finds no violations, and the update installs after a restart.
If not: If DISM cannot repair the store or the update still fails, run Fix 1, or Fix 3 first if downloads keep failing.
Fix 3. Free up disk space and clear the update cache, then reinstall again
15 minutes, plus the reinstallLow riskReinstall now stops during the download or fails, or drive C: is almost full.
The repair is downloaded through Windows Update, so a damaged download in the update cache or a full drive stops it. Microsoft's reinstall guide also tells you to check free space before any reinstall.
- Open Settings > System > Storage and read how much space is free on drive C:.
- If space is short, free it first: Free up disk space and delete temporary files.
- Clear the update cache with the steps below, then restart the PC.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery and select Reinstall now again.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Type cmd in the search box, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Select Yes when Windows asks for permission.
- Stop the update services. Type the commands below and press Enter after each one. If Windows says that other services depend on Cryptographic Services, it stops them too. A message that a service is not started is fine.
net stop wuauserv net stop bits net stop cryptsvc - Delete the download queue files. This clears the list of downloads that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service keeps. If Windows says it cannot find the files, continue.
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat" - Rename the update cache folders. Renaming keeps a copy in case you need it; Windows creates new, empty folders when the services start again. If you get Access is denied, a service is still running: repeat the previous step.
ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren %systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old - Start the services again. Type the commands below and press Enter after each one. The requested service has already been started is fine: Windows started it on its own.
net start cryptsvc net start bits net start wuauserv - Restart and check for updates. Restart the PC. Then select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. The first check can take longer than usual because everything is downloaded again.
These steps were written for Windows 11 and Windows 10 (the steps are the same). The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Reset Windows Update components

It worked if: The repair downloads in full this time and installs, and the PC restarts without the notice.
If not: Use the installation media instead of Windows Update: go to Fix 4.
Fix 4. Repair Windows with an in-place upgrade from a Windows ISO
1 to 2 hoursLow riskThe Recovery option is missing, Fix 1 failed, or the PC runs Windows 10.
Running setup.exe from Windows installation media reinstalls Windows over itself without Windows Update. Microsoft says this in-place installation keeps personal files, settings and installed apps when you choose to keep them.
- Check your edition first in Settings > System > About, next to Edition. Microsoft says the media must be the same edition, for example Home for Home.
- Back up your files and make sure Windows is activated: activation must happen again after the reinstall.
- Download the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's Download Windows 11 page, or create a USB drive with the Media Creation Tool.
- In File Explorer, right-click the ISO and select Mount, or connect the USB drive.
- Open the new drive and run
setup.exe. Select Yes when Windows asks for permission. - Select Change what to keep and choose Keep personal files and apps, then Next.
- On Ready to install, check that it says Keep personal files and apps and select Install.
- Let the PC restart several times. Do not switch it off.

On Windows 10 use Windows 10 media of the same edition. Windows 10 left support on 14 October 2025, so a repaired Windows 10 PC no longer gets security updates. Consider Windows 11 if the PC qualifies.
It worked if: Setup finishes, you sign in to the same desktop with your apps and files, and Windows Update installs the update that failed.
If not: If setup itself fails or rolls back, check the drive with Fix 6, then use Fix 7.
Fix 5. Install the failed update by hand from the Microsoft Update Catalog
20 to 40 minutesLow riskWindows is repaired and runs normally, but one KB update still fails.
After a repair, a single update can still fail inside Windows Update. The full package from the catalog installs without the Windows Update download and shows the real error if it fails again.
- Check your Windows version. Press Windows key + R, type winver and press Enter. Note the version (for example 25H2) and the OS build.
- Find the KB number. Open Settings > Windows Update. A failed or pending update is listed with its KB number; earlier ones are under Update history.
- Check the processor type. Open Settings > System > About and look at System type: an x64-based PC needs the x64 file, an ARM-based PC (for example Snapdragon) needs the arm64 file.
- Search the catalog. Open the Microsoft Update Catalog at catalog.update.microsoft.com in your browser, type the KB number (for example KB5124010) in the search box and press Enter.
- Pick the right row. Find the row whose title names your Windows version and your processor type (x64-based or arm64-based) and select Download on that row.
- Download every file listed. A window lists one or more .msu links. Download all of them into one empty folder, for example C:\packages. On Windows 11 24H2 and later the list can include earlier checkpoint updates that the new one needs.
- Install a single file. If there is only one file, double-click it and confirm the installation in the Windows Update Standalone Installer.
- Install several files with DISM. If there are several files, open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt and run DISM with the newest file. DISM finds the other files in the same folder and installs them in the right order.
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\packages\<newest-file>.msu - Restart. Restart the PC when the installation finishes, then run winver again: the OS build should have changed.
These steps were written for Windows 11 24H2 and later; Windows 10 22H2. The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Install an update from the Microsoft Update Catalog

It worked if: The update installs, and Update history lists it as successfully installed.
If not: Note the error code it shows and read "If the message is still there" below.
Fix 6. Check the drive for errors after a clone, crash or power loss
10 minutes to 2 hoursLow riskThe notice appeared after you cloned Windows to a new drive, after a hard shutdown, or it keeps coming back.
A repair only lasts if the drive keeps the files intact. File system errors from a clone, a crash or a failing drive damage system files again, and Windows asks for another reinstall.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Type cmd in the search box on the taskbar, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Select Yes when Windows asks for permission.
- Scan the drive without changing anything. Type the command below and press Enter. Replace C: with another drive letter to check that drive. This scan only reports; it does not fix anything.
chkdsk C: - If errors were found, run the repair. Run chkdsk with /f to fix file system errors. On the Windows drive (C:) chkdsk cannot lock the drive while Windows is running, so it offers to check it at the next restart.
chkdsk C: /f - Schedule the check and restart. Type Y and press Enter, then restart the PC. chkdsk runs before Windows starts. Do not turn the PC off while it runs.
- Read the result after the restart. The report of a check made at startup is not shown on the desktop. Open PowerShell and run the command below to see it, or open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) > Windows Logs > Application and filter by the sources Chkdsk and Wininit.
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Application'} | Where-Object { $_.ProviderName -match 'wininit' } | Select-Object -First 1 | Format-List TimeCreated, Message
These steps were written for Windows 11 and Windows 10 (the steps are the same). The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Check a disk for errors (chkdsk)
If chkdsk finds and fixes errors, run Fix 2 and then Fix 1 again. If it reports bad sectors on a new SSD or keeps finding errors, contact the maker of the drive before you reinstall anything.
It worked if: Chkdsk reports no problems, or fixes them, and the next repair holds after several updates.
If not: Repeated errors point to hardware. Back up your files and replace the drive, then go to Fix 7.
Fix 7. Reset this PC with Keep my files and Cloud download
1 to 2 hoursRead the warningEvery repair above failed and you accept reinstalling your apps afterwards.
Reset this PC puts a fresh copy of Windows on the PC instead of repairing the existing one. It removes the damage for certain, but it also removes your installed apps and settings.
Keep my files keeps your personal files but removes installed apps and changes in Settings. Back up your files with Back up your files (Windows Backup, File History, Time Machine), save the installers and licence keys of your programs, and have your BitLocker recovery key ready.
- If that did not help: Reset PC. Back in Settings > System > Recovery, next to Reset this PC, select Reset PC. This keeps your personal files but removes installed apps and settings.
- Choose Keep my files. Select Keep my files. Do not select Remove everything.

Keep my files removes apps and settings but keeps personal files. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Choose where Windows comes from. Select Cloud download to download a fresh copy of Windows, or Local reinstall to use the files already on the PC (faster, but may not include the latest updates).
- Reset. Review the summary and select Reset. The PC restarts several times.
These steps were written for Windows 11 22H2 and later. The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Reinstall Windows without losing files
It worked if: Windows starts with your files in place, and Windows Update installs updates again without the notice.
If not: Read the next section: at this point the cause is outside Windows, usually the drive.
If the reinstall message is still there
When the notice returns after a repair, or the repair itself cannot run, the next step depends on what you see. If Windows reports that no repair version can be found or the repair cannot start, the second and third rows apply.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Work or school PC | Microsoft says the option is not available on PCs with managed updates. Send the administrator the failed KB, its code and CBS.log. |
| No Fix problems using Windows Update on a home PC | Install all optional updates: Microsoft requires the February 2024 optional update or newer. Until then, use Fix 4. |
| Reinstall now fails or rolls back | Free space and clear the cache (Fix 3), then use the in-place upgrade (Fix 4). |
| The notice comes back after every month's update | Check the drive with Check a disk for errors (chkdsk). A drive that damages files again needs replacing. |
| Setup and Reset both fail | Test the memory with How to test your RAM with Windows Memory Diagnostic and contact Microsoft Support from the Get Help app. |
- Where the cause is written: Settings > Windows Update > Update history shows each failed update with its code.
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.logholds the servicing details. Copy it to the Desktop before you open it, and search for, error.- What to send to support: the notice text, the failed KB number and code, the OS build from winver, and which fixes you ran.
How to keep the reinstall notice from coming back
- Let updates finish and restart when Windows asks. An interrupted update is the most common way components get damaged.
- Keep plenty of free space on drive C: before the monthly update.
- After cloning to a new drive, run chkdsk once before the next update.
- Keep a current backup, so any repair is a calm choice.
- Do not switch the PC off while it shows that updates are being installed.
- Do not delete files in
C:\Windows\WinSxSby hand. That folder is the component store the repair depends on. - Do not run registry or system cleaner scripts from forums that remove Windows packages.
- Do not ignore the notice for months: the failed updates carry security fixes.
If the PC freezes during updates now and then, start it once in a clean boot to rule out background programs that hold files open: How to perform a clean boot in Windows. Turn the services back on afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
What does "Reinstall your current version of Windows to repair system files and components" mean?
It means an update failed to install and Windows thinks the reason is damaged system files or components. Microsoft documents the message on its support page about fixing issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows. It is a recommendation, not an error code, and the Reinstall now button starts a repair reinstall of the version you already have. The failed update usually carries its own install error code on the line above the notice.
Will Reinstall now delete my files or apps?
No. Microsoft says Fix problems using Windows Update reinstalls the same version of Windows, repairs system files and components, and preserves your apps, files and settings. It is different from Reset this PC, which removes apps even with Keep my files. A reinstall can still be interrupted by a power cut or a failing drive, so back up the files you cannot lose before you start, and keep the PC plugged in and online.
How long does it take to reinstall the current version of Windows?
Plan for about an hour or more. Microsoft does not give a time. Windows first downloads a repair version of the last update that installed successfully, which is a large download, then installs it and restarts. A slow connection or an old hard drive makes it longer. You can keep working during the download, but save your work before the restart. You can let the PC restart on its own 15 minutes after the installation.
Why is Fix problems using Windows Update missing in Recovery?
Microsoft names three reasons. The PC is managed by work or school, and updates managed by policy, Autopatch or the deployment service turn the option off. The PC runs a Windows version older than Windows 11 with the 2022 annual update. Or the February 2024 optional update, or a later update, is not installed. On a home PC, install pending updates and look again. Otherwise use setup.exe from a Windows ISO, Fix 4 on this page.
Does Windows 10 have Reinstall now?
No. Microsoft's page on Fix problems using Windows Update applies to Windows 11 only. On Windows 10 you get the same result with an in-place upgrade: run setup.exe from Windows 10 installation media of the same edition and keep personal files and apps. Windows 10 left support on 14 October 2025, so a repaired Windows 10 PC no longer gets security updates. If the PC meets the requirements, moving to Windows 11 is the better repair.
Can I just close the notice and ignore it?
You can close it with the X, but the problem stays. The notice appears because an update could not install, and while system files are damaged the next updates usually fail too. Those updates carry security fixes. If you cannot spend an hour on the reinstall today, run DISM and SFC first, which takes 15 to 40 minutes, and plan the reinstall for later. Do not leave it for months.
I cloned Windows from an HDD to an SSD and now get this message. What should I do?
Start with Reinstall now as on any other PC: it repairs Windows on the drive it runs from. Microsoft does not name cloning as a cause, and we could not confirm that a missing partition triggers the notice. A clone can carry over read errors from the old drive, though. Run chkdsk on the new drive first, then DISM and SFC, then Reinstall now. If chkdsk keeps finding errors, check the SSD with its maker's tool.
What do people on Reddit recommend for this message?
We do not use forum threads as a source, so this page does not repeat advice from Reddit. What we can say is what Microsoft documents: select Reinstall now first, and use Windows installation media with Keep personal files and apps when that is not possible. Forum advice to delete system folders or run cleanup scripts can make the damage worse. Back up your files before any repair, and use Reset this PC only when the other repairs fail, because it removes your apps.
Is this page the answer for "vuelve a instalar la versión actual de Windows para reparar los archivos y componentes del sistema"?
Yes. Readers search this Spanish wording, and it describes the same Windows Update notice and the same repair, only in another display language. The fixes are the same. The menu names in the steps are the English ones: in another language follow their position, Settings, then System, then Recovery, then the Reinstall now button next to the Windows Update repair. Commands such as DISM and sfc are typed the same in every language.
