Volmgr 162 error
on Windows

For several weeks now, I have had this issue when my PC suddenly hangs and then crashes. This happens consistently, and it doesn't matter what I'm doing on it. When checking the Event Log, I noticed numerous Event ID 162 (Volmgr) errors, followed up by one Event ID 41, which probably crashes Windows. Any tips for me would be appreciated.

Among the various issues that can lead to system instability, the Event ID 162, commonly referred to as the Volmgr 162 error, stands out as a notable cause.

Fix 1. Check system time and date settings

Incorrect system time and date can cause Volmgr 162 errors, as they are essential for various system operations. Ensuring these settings are correct is a basic yet crucial step.

• Type in Control Panel in Windows search and press Enter.
• Go to Clock and Region and click on Date and Time.
• Pick the Internet Time tab and select Change Settings.
• Make sure that Synchronize with an Internet time server box is ticked.
• Click Update now and OK.

Fix 2. Update Windows

An outdated Windows operating system can lead to various errors, including Volmgr 162. Keeping Windows updated ensures all system components work optimally.

• Type Updates and press Enter.
• In the new window, click Check for updates.
• Wait till all the files are downloaded and installed.
• If optional updates are available, install them as well.
• Restart your device when done.

Fix 3. Run SFC and DISM

• Type cmd in Windows search.
• Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
• The User Account Control window will ask whether you want to allow changes - click Yes.
• In the Command Prompt window, paste the following command and hit Enter:
  sfc /scannow
• Once the scan is complete, use the following commands and press Enter after each:
  Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
  Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
  Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
• Restart your computer.

Fix 4. Check Disk for errors

Running a disk check can identify and fix these issues.

• Open Command Prompt as administrator, as explained above.
• In the new window, type in the following command and press Enter after:
  chkdsk c: /f
  (Note: use chkdsk c: /f /r /x command if you are using SSD as your primary partition)
• If you receive an error, type in Y, close down Command Prompt, and restart your device.
• Wait until the scan is finished - you can find the results in the Event Viewer.

Fix 5. Perform a System Restore

Restoring your system to a previous state can reverse changes that cause the error.

• Type in Create a Restore point in Windows search and hit Enter.
• In the System Protection tab, pick System restore.
• Click Next.
• Click Show more restore points (if available).
• Pick the time before the problem occurred and click Next.
• Your computer will restart.

Fix 6. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can sometimes cause system errors due to incomplete shutdowns.

• Type Control Panel in Windows search and hit Enter.

Fix 7. Reset Windows

• Go to Update & Security and pick Recovery on the left side of the window.
• Find Reset this PC section and click Get Started.
• Select Keep my files and Cloud download.
• Next, pick whether you want to reinstall the apps.

• Your system will restart, and the process of Windows reset will begin.

Other solutions

• Clean your PC from dust - especially around the power supply (PSU).

• Run MemTest. MemTest is a great way to check your RAM for malfunctions.
• Stop overclocking. While overclocking is a great way of boosting PC performance, it can also result in system, instability and crashes. You can disable overclocking using special programs such as MSI Afterburner or simply reset BIOS settings.
• Replace the motherboard. Several users reported that they managed to fix the Volmgr 162 error by replacing their motherboard. This might be expensive, so to diagnose this problem correctly, you'd have to resort to a paid repair service. Alternatively, you could simply buy a new motherboard, but there's no guarantee it will fix the issue without having it checked by a professional first.
