Applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10: quality, feature and Microsoft Defender definition updates that fail in Windows Update, Windows Security or Configuration Manager with 0x80240022
8 methods in this guide
Hi, I'm using Windows 11. I recently encountered the error code 0x80240022 while attempting to download and install the latest Windows updates. This has prevented me from keeping my system up to date. What are the potential causes of this, and how can I successfully resolve it?
Error 0x80240022 means that every update Windows tried to install in one run failed. It is a summary code: the real reason belongs to the update that failed, often a Microsoft Defender definition update or a feature update. Restart the PC, retry once, and if it fails again, look at which update it was.
0x80240022 means all updates in one install run failed. Restart the PC and select Retry in Settings > Windows Update (Fix 1). If a Defender definition update failed, update it from Windows Security instead (Fix 2). If a feature update failed, free space and remove the app that blocks it (Fix 3). If one KB keeps failing, install it from the Microsoft Update Catalog to see the real code (Fix 4).
| Error | 0x80240022, in Windows Update, in Windows Security as Virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated., or in logs as Installation job encountered some failures. Job Result = 0x80240022. |
|---|---|
| Where it appears | Settings > Windows Update and Update history, the Windows Security (Windows Defender) definition update, and the Configuration Manager log WUAHandler.log on work PCs. |
| Main cause | Microsoft names the code WU_E_ALL_UPDATES_FAILED: "Operation failed for all the updates." Each failed update has its own reason, and that reason is the real cause. |
| Fastest fix | Restart and Retry (Fix 1). For Defender definitions, Check for updates in Windows Security (Fix 2). For a feature update, free space and check app compatibility (Fix 3). |

What Windows update error 0x80240022 means
Windows Update installs updates in a job: one run that can hold one update or ten. Microsoft's Windows Update error code list names 0x80240022 WU_E_ALL_UPDATES_FAILED and describes it as "Operation failed for all the updates." So the job did not fail on its own. Every update inside it failed, each with its own code.
That makes 0x80240022 a summary, like the word "failed" at the bottom of a report. When the job held a single update, the code simply says that this one update did not install. The useful questions are which update it was and what code it had.
| What you see | Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Install error - 0x80240022 | Settings > Windows Update, next to the update's name | The update downloaded but did not install. The name tells you which kind it is. |
| Virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated. Error code: 0x80240022 | Windows Defender or Windows Security, when definitions update | The Defender definition update failed. Fix 2 is for you. |
| Installation job encountered some failures. Job Result = 0x80240022 | WUAHandler.log of the Configuration Manager client on work PCs | The deployment from your organisation failed. The lines above it name the update. |
| 0x80240022(-2145124318) | Scripts, reports and some management tools | The same code written as a signed decimal number. Nothing else changes. |

Why error 0x80240022 appears
The meaning of the code comes from Microsoft. The order below comes from the cases that show up with this code: which updates fail and what the logs say next to it. Start with the row that matches the update that failed.
| Cause | How often | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| The update stopped once: a restart was pending, the connection dropped or drive C: was full. | Most often | The error came once, and later updates installed. | Fix 1 |
| A Microsoft Defender definition (security intelligence) update failed. | Often | The failed item is a Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus or the Defender dialog shows the code. | Fix 2 |
| A feature update is blocked by an incompatible app or too little free space. | Often on work PCs | The failed item is a Windows 11 version upgrade, for example to 25H2. | Fix 3 |
| The Windows Update copy of one KB update is broken. | Sometimes | The same KB fails at every retry. | Fix 4, Fix 5 |
| The component store, where Windows keeps update files, is damaged. | Sometimes | The Catalog installer shows a code such as 0x80073712 or one of the 0x800F08 family. | Fix 6 |
| Windows Update itself is broken. | Rarely | Every update fails, month after month. | Fix 5, Fix 7, Fix 8 |

0x80240024 is WU_E_NO_UPDATE, "There are no updates.", and 0x8024002D is WU_E_SOURCE_ABSENT, a full-file update that needs the source to install. 0x80070022, 0x80180022 and 0x801C0022 only share the last digits and come from other parts of Windows.
How to fix Windows update error 0x80240022
Fix 1 to Fix 4 are specific to this code and solve it for most readers. Fix 5 to Fix 7 repair Windows Update itself, for the case where the same update keeps failing. Fix 8 reinstalls Windows over itself and keeps your apps and files.
| What you see or have | Start with |
|---|---|
| The error came once, other updates install | Fix 1 |
| A Defender definition update failed, or the Defender dialog shows the code | Fix 2 |
| A feature update (a new Windows 11 version) failed | Fix 3 |
| The same KB update fails at every retry | Fix 4, then Fix 5 |
| The Catalog installer shows 0x80073712 or a 0x800F08 code | Fix 6 |
| Every update fails, month after month | Fix 5, Fix 7, then Fix 8 |
| A work PC with Configuration Manager or Intune | Fix 3, then the log section, and your IT team |
Fix 1. Restart the PC, retry and note which update failed
5 to 20 minutesNo riskThe error appeared once, or you do not know yet which update failed.
0x80240022 only says that every update in the run failed. A restart waiting from an earlier update, a dropped connection or a full drive C: makes the whole run fail once. A real restart clears the pending state, and the retry downloads what was missing.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history (Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history).
- Note the name and KB number of the failed item, and whether it is under Quality updates, Feature updates, Driver updates or Definition updates.
- Select Start > Power > Restart. Use Restart, not Shut down.
- Check that drive C: has free space in Settings > System > Storage. If it is almost full, free space first: Free up disk space and delete temporary files.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Retry or Check for updates.
- Restart again when Windows asks.

It worked if: Update history lists the update as Successfully installed, and Windows Update says you are up to date.
If not: If it was a Defender definition update, go to Fix 2. A feature update, go to Fix 3. A KB update that fails again, go to Fix 4.
Fix 2. Update Microsoft Defender definitions outside Windows Update
5 to 10 minutesLow riskThe failed item is a Defender definition (security intelligence) update, or the Defender dialog shows Error code: 0x80240022.
Defender definitions do not need Windows Update. Windows Security can fetch them itself, and Microsoft's command line tool MpCmdRun can clear a broken set of dynamic definitions and download them again. Newer definitions replace the failed one, so the error in Windows Update stops mattering.
- Select Start, type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Protection updates, then Check for updates.
- If that fails too, type cmd in the search box, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Go to the Defender folder:
cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender" - Clear the dynamic definitions:
MpCmdRun.exe -RemoveDefinitions -DynamicSignatures - Download fresh definitions:
MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate - Open Protection updates again and check the date under Security intelligence.

Microsoft says the folder of MpCmdRun is not in the PATH, so you must go to it first. The newest copy sits in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Platform\ followed by the platform version, and the older one in C:\Program Files\Windows Defender. Run it in a Command Prompt opened as administrator.
It worked if: Windows Security shows today's date under Security intelligence, and Windows Update no longer lists a failed definition update after the next check.
If not: If you use another antivirus, Defender may be off and its definition updates can fail. That is expected. If Defender is your antivirus and updates still fail, reset the update components with Fix 5.
Fix 3. Clear the way for a feature update: free space and incompatible apps
15 to 45 minutesLow riskThe failed item is a Windows 11 version upgrade, for example to 25H2, or a feature update pushed by Configuration Manager.
A feature update runs Windows Setup, and Setup stops when an installed app is incompatible or the drive lacks space. Windows Update then reports the whole job as 0x80240022. Setup writes the blocking app into a report, so you can remove exactly that app.
- Free space on drive C: first: Free up disk space and delete temporary files.
- Open File Explorer and turn on View > Show > Hidden items.
- Go to
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Pantherand openActionableReport.htmlif it is there. - Note the app or driver the report names as a block.
- Uninstall that app, or update it from its maker: Uninstall a program or app in Windows.
- Restart the PC and run the feature update again from Settings > Windows Update.
Microsoft's free SetupDiag tool reads the Setup logs and names the failure, including too little disk space. Run it on the PC after the failed upgrade and read the rule it reports.
It worked if: The feature update downloads, installs over one or two restarts, and winver shows the new version.
If not: If no app is named and space is fine, reset the update components with Fix 5, or upgrade with the repair reinstall in Fix 8.
Fix 4. Install the update by hand from the Microsoft Update Catalog
15 to 30 minutesLow riskA cumulative or security update with a KB number fails at every retry.
The Catalog file is a fresh, complete copy of the update, so a broken Windows Update download is out of the way. If it fails too, the standalone installer shows the update's own error code, which 0x80240022 hides.
- Check the processor type. Open Settings > System > About and look at System type: an x64-based PC needs the x64 file, an ARM-based PC (for example Snapdragon) needs the arm64 file.
- Search the catalog. Open the Microsoft Update Catalog at catalog.update.microsoft.com in your browser, type the KB number (for example KB5124010) in the search box and press Enter.
- Pick the right row. Find the row whose title names your Windows version and your processor type (x64-based or arm64-based) and select Download on that row.
- Download every file listed. A window lists one or more .msu links. Download all of them into one empty folder, for example C:\packages. On Windows 11 24H2 and later the list can include earlier checkpoint updates that the new one needs.
- Install a single file. If there is only one file, double-click it and confirm the installation in the Windows Update Standalone Installer.
- Install several files with DISM. If there are several files, open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt and run DISM with the newest file. DISM finds the other files in the same folder and installs them in the right order.
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\packages\<newest-file>.msu - Restart. Restart the PC when the installation finishes, then run winver again: the OS build should have changed.
These steps were written for Windows 11 24H2 and later; Windows 10 22H2. The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Install an update from the Microsoft Update Catalog
- If the installer stops with another code, write it down.
- A code such as 0x80073712 or one starting with 0x800f08 points to damaged update files: go to Fix 6.
- Any other code: search our site for that code, it is the real cause.
It worked if: The installer finishes, the PC restarts, and winver shows the build of the update.
If not: If it fails with the same code again, reset the update components with Fix 5.
Fix 5. Reset the Windows Update components
10 minutesLow riskThe same update keeps failing after Fix 1 to Fix 4, or every update fails.
Windows Update reuses its downloads in the SoftwareDistribution folder at every retry. When those files are broken, every update in the job fails again. Renaming the cache folders and restarting the services makes Windows download everything from zero.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Type cmd in the search box, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Select Yes when Windows asks for permission.
- Stop the update services. Type the commands below and press Enter after each one. If Windows says that other services depend on Cryptographic Services, it stops them too. A message that a service is not started is fine.
net stop wuauserv net stop bits net stop cryptsvc - Delete the download queue files. This clears the list of downloads that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service keeps. If Windows says it cannot find the files, continue.
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat" - Rename the update cache folders. Renaming keeps a copy in case you need it; Windows creates new, empty folders when the services start again. If you get Access is denied, a service is still running: repeat the previous step.
ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren %systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old - Start the services again. Type the commands below and press Enter after each one. The requested service has already been started is fine: Windows started it on its own.
net start cryptsvc net start bits net start wuauserv - Restart and check for updates. Restart the PC. Then select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. The first check can take longer than usual because everything is downloaded again.
These steps were written for Windows 11 and Windows 10 (the steps are the same). The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Reset Windows Update components

It worked if: Windows Update downloads the updates again and installs them without the error.
If not: If the error comes back, repair the component store with Fix 6.
Fix 6. Repair the component store with DISM and SFC
15 to 40 minutesNo riskThe Catalog installer showed 0x80073712 or a 0x800F08 code, or Fix 5 did not help.
Quality and feature updates build on the component store in C:\Windows\WinSxS. When files there are damaged, every update that needs them fails. DISM with RestoreHealth downloads clean copies, and SFC then repairs the system files that depend on them.
- Open an elevated command window. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin), or type cmd in the search box, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Select Yes when Windows asks for permission.
- Run DISM first. Type the command below and press Enter. DISM downloads clean copies of damaged components from Windows Update, so it can take several minutes. Wait until it says The operation completed successfully.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Run System File Checker. In the same window, type the command below and press Enter. Do not close the window until the verification reaches 100%.
sfc /scannow - Read the result and restart. Compare the last message with the table below this guide, then restart the PC so that repaired files are loaded.
These steps were written for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Run DISM and SFC to repair Windows system files

It worked if: DISM reports The operation completed successfully., SFC finds no violations or repairs them, and the updates install after a restart.
If not: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, Fix 7.
Fix 7. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
5 minutesNo riskUpdates keep failing and you want an automatic check before a reinstall.
The troubleshooter checks the update services, their settings and pending update state, and repairs what it finds. It does not fix a blocked feature update or a broken Defender definition set, so it comes after the specific fixes.
- Open Troubleshoot settings. Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
- Open the list of troubleshooters. Select Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Under Most frequent, select Run next to Windows Update. The Get Help app opens and starts the checks.
- Read the result. Wait until Get Help finishes. If it found and fixed a problem, it says so and asks whether this solved the problem. Answer the question so it can offer the next step.
- Restart the PC. Restart when the troubleshooter finishes, even if it does not ask you to.
- Check for updates again. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, and install the updates it finds.
These steps were written for Windows 11 (screenshots: 26H2). The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

It worked if: The troubleshooter reports that it fixed a problem, and the update installs on the next try.
If not: If it finds nothing and every update still fails, use the repair reinstall in Fix 8.
Fix 8. Reinstall Windows over itself and keep your apps and files
1 to 2 hoursLow riskEvery update fails with 0x80240022 and Fix 1 to Fix 7 did not help.
A repair reinstall replaces the servicing stack, the component store and the update services with clean copies of the current Windows version. That removes every Windows cause behind the failed updates at once, while apps, files and settings stay.
- Open Recovery in Settings. Open Settings > System > Recovery. Next to Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now. This keeps your apps, files and settings.

Fix problems using Windows Update reinstalls the current version and keeps apps, files and settings. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Start the reinstall. Choose whether the PC may restart on its own 15 minutes after the installation, then select OK.
- Wait and restart. Windows Update downloads and installs a repair copy of your current Windows version. Keep the PC plugged in and online, and restart it when asked.
These steps were written for Windows 11 22H2 and later. The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Reinstall Windows without losing files
Your files are meant to stay, but a failed reinstall can leave Windows unable to start. Back up what you cannot lose first: Back up your files (Windows Backup, File History, Time Machine). Keep a laptop plugged in until it finishes.
It worked if: The PC starts into the same desktop with your apps and files, and the next updates install without the error.
If not: Read the next section: the logs tell you what is still wrong.
If error 0x80240022 is still there
Because 0x80240022 is a summary, the real reason sits in the log line of each failed update. Read it before you try anything else.
- Press Win + R, type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > System and filter by the source WindowsUpdateClient.
- Open the error entry from the time of the failure and note the update title and its code.
- For Windows updates, also open
%windir%\Logs\CBS, copyCBS.logto the Desktop and search the copy forerrornear that time.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Work PC with Configuration Manager | Look in WUAHandler.log above the line Installation job encountered some failures. Job Result = 0x80240022 for the update ID, and send it to your IT team. |
| Feature update on a managed PC, also with the Intune report text ORCFailed | Send IT the ActionableReport.html or the SetupDiag result from Fix 3. The update itself is not broken. |
| Windows 10 22H2 | Windows 10 left support on 14 October 2025. Only PCs in Extended Security Updates still get security updates. Plan a move to Windows 11. |
| The drive shows errors or the PC lost power during an update | Check the drive first: Check a disk for errors (chkdsk) |
Nothing about 0x80240022 points to memory or the processor. The exception is a drive that reports errors in chkdsk, because a failing drive can damage update files again after every repair.
How to keep error 0x80240022 from coming back
- Restart when Windows asks, so a half-installed update does not block the next run.
- Keep free space on drive C:, especially before a feature update.
- Update or remove old security, VPN and system tools before a Windows 11 version upgrade.
- Read the name of the failed update before you start any repair.
- Do not download update files from sites other than catalog.update.microsoft.com.
- Do not delete files in
C:\Windows\WinSxSby hand. Updates build on that folder. - Do not turn off your antivirus for good to make an update install.
- Do not leave the PC without updates for months while you look for a fix.
If the error came from a Defender definition update and Windows Security now shows today's date, there is nothing left to fix. The failed entry stays in Update history as a record only.
Frequently asked questions
What is error code 0x80240022?
It is a Windows Update Agent error that means every update in one install run failed. Microsoft's error list names it WU_E_ALL_UPDATES_FAILED: "Operation failed for all the updates." When the run held only one update, it simply means that update did not install. The code does not say why. The name of the failed update in Update history and its own code in Event Viewer tell you that, so read them first.
What does 0x80240022(-2145124318) mean?
It is the same error written twice: once in hexadecimal and once as a signed decimal number. Some scripts, reports and management consoles print both. -2145124318 is not a second error and does not change the fix. Find the update that failed, then follow the chooser at the top of the fixes: Fix 1 for a one-time failure, Fix 2 for Defender, Fix 3 for a feature update.
What does Installation job encountered some failures. Job Result = 0x80240022 mean?
That line comes from WUAHandler.log, the Windows Update log of the Configuration Manager client on work and school PCs. It means the deployment your IT team sent failed for every update in it. For a feature update, the most common reasons are an incompatible app and too little free space, so check ActionableReport.html as in Fix 3. The lines above it in the log show the update ID.
Why do Defender definitions fail with 0x80240022?
The definition update is one of the updates Windows Update installs, so when it fails, the run reports 0x80240022. A broken set of dynamic definitions, a pending restart or a connection problem can cause it. Update the definitions from Windows Security, and if that fails, clear and reload them with MpCmdRun as in Fix 2. If another antivirus is active, Defender may be off and its updates can fail harmlessly.
Does 0x80240022 appear on Windows 11 25H2?
Yes. The code belongs to the Windows Update Agent, which works the same on Windows 11 25H2, older Windows 11 versions and Windows 10. When the upgrade to 25H2 itself fails with it, the feature update is the failed item, so start with Fix 3: free space, then read ActionableReport.html for a blocking app. When a monthly update fails on 25H2, start with Fix 1.
What does install error - 0x80240022 mean in Windows Update?
It is how Settings shows the failure next to one update. The update was downloaded, but it did not install. Note the name: a cumulative update with a KB number, a feature update or a definition update. Restart the PC and select Retry. If it fails again, install a KB update by hand from the Microsoft Update Catalog (Fix 4), which also shows the update's own error code.
Is 0x80240024 the same as 0x80240022?
No. 0x80240024 is WU_E_NO_UPDATE, which Microsoft describes as "There are no updates." It usually means a search or an install found nothing to install, not that something failed. 0x80240022 means updates were found and all of them failed. A neighbour, 0x8024002D, means a full-file update could not install because it needed the source files. Codes like 0x80070022 only share digits and belong to other parts of Windows.
Can I fix 0x80240022 by turning off my antivirus?
Not as a fix. No source ties this code to security software in general, and turning protection off would leave the PC exposed. Old security tools can block a feature update, and then ActionableReport.html names them, so update or remove that app (Fix 3). If you suspect interference, pause protection for one test only: Turn off Microsoft Defender protection for a moment. A clean boot is a safer test: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Do I lose my files if I reinstall Windows to fix this?
Not with the repair reinstall in Fix 8. It reinstalls the same Windows version and keeps your apps, files and settings. Reset this PC with Keep my files is different: it keeps your files but removes installed apps. Back up the files you cannot lose before any reinstall, and keep a laptop plugged in until it finishes, because a reinstall that stops halfway can leave Windows unable to start.
I searched site:ugetfix.com for this code. Is this the right page?
Yes. This is the uGetFix guide for Windows Update error 0x80240022, also written as 80240022 and 0x80240022(-2145124318). It covers Windows 11 and Windows 10, Defender definition updates, feature updates and the Configuration Manager log line.
