Despite a stable network connection, my printer is now inaccessible from my laptop. While attempting to reconnect, I see the printer name, but an error surfaces, stating, "Windows cannot connect to the printer," followed by "Operation Failed" with the error code 0x00000002. I am not sure what to do here.
Printer error 0x00000002 is Windows system error 2: "The system cannot find the file specified." It appears when you connect to a shared printer and a driver file Windows needs is missing or damaged. Remove the printer's driver package first, then add the printer again by its exact share path.
Yes, it can be fixed, and the printer is almost never broken. The code is Windows error 2, ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND: a file the printer connection needs is missing. Most often the copy of the printer driver on your PC is damaged. Press Win + R, run printui /s /t2, remove the driver with Remove driver and driver package (Fix 1), then add the printer again as \\ComputerName\PrinterShareName (Fix 2).

What printer error 0x00000002 "Operation failed" means
0x00000002 is the hexadecimal form of Windows system error 2. Microsoft's list of system error codes names it ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND. Its text reads: "The system cannot find the file specified". With a printer, the file is almost always part of the printer driver: a driver file, a settings file or a print processor.
When you connect to a shared printer, your PC asks the host for its driver, stores a copy under C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers and records it in the registry. If that record points to a file that is gone or damaged, the Connect to Printer box stops with error 2. The printer itself was never reached.

| What you see | When | What it points to |
|---|---|---|
| Connect to Printer: "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation failed with error 0x00000002." | You double-click a shared printer or add it by its share path | The driver copy on your PC, or the driver the host offers. Fix 1 to Fix 3. |
| Add Printer wizard stops with error 0x00000002 | A driver is installed for a local or network printer | The driver package or its print processor. Fix 1 and Fix 5. |
| "Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000002)" | You open Printer properties or print a test page | The installed driver cannot find one of its own files. Fix 1. |
The correct form has eight digits after 0x. People also type 0x0000002, 0x000002, 0x00002 or 00000002. Leading zeros do not change a number, so all of them are error 2. The same number also appears in games, blue screens and Windows Update. This page is about printers only.
Why Windows shows error 0x00000002 for a printer: causes, ranked
Microsoft gives no single cause for this code with printers. The ranking below follows from what error 2 means, from Microsoft's checklist for shared printers and from an independent technical write-up that names a damaged local driver as the usual cause. Cheap and common causes come first.
| # | Cause | How to recognise it | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The copy of the printer driver on your PC is damaged or half removed | The printer worked before, or it fails only on this PC while others print | Fix 1 |
| 2 | The share path is wrong or the host cannot be reached | \\ComputerName does not open in File Explorer, or the share name changed | Fix 2 |
| 3 | The host offers no driver that fits your PC, or your account may not install it | An administrator can add the printer and you cannot, or the PCs run different Windows editions | Fix 3 |
| 4 | The Print Spooler holds stale jobs or a stuck connection | Print jobs hang in the queue, or the error came after a crash | Fix 4 |
| 5 | Old driver entries or a vendor print processor stay in the registry | Fix 1 removes the driver, but the error returns at once | Fix 5, Fix 6 |
| 6 | Windows print components are damaged | Every printer fails, or the Print Spooler keeps stopping | Fix 7, Fix 8 |
The error comes from Windows before any page reaches the printer. A stable network, as in the reader's question above, fits this: the PC sees the printer name, but the driver step fails.
How to fix printer error 0x00000002: eight fixes in order
Start at Fix 1 and stop when the printer works. Fix 1 and Fix 2 solve most cases. Fix 3 to Fix 6 are for errors that come back, and Fix 7 and Fix 8 repair Windows itself.
| What you see or have | Start with |
|---|---|
| The printer worked before, or only this PC fails | Fix 1 |
\\ComputerName does not open, or the host was renamed | Fix 2 |
| An administrator can add the printer, your account cannot | Fix 3 |
| Print jobs are stuck in the queue | Fix 4 |
| The driver was removed, but the error returns at once | Fix 5, then Fix 6 |
| Every printer fails, or the Print Spooler keeps stopping | Fix 7 and Fix 8 |
Fix 1. Remove the printer and its driver package, then connect again
10 minutesLow riskFor most readers, as the first step. It needs an administrator account.
Error 2 says a file is missing, and with a shared printer that file is usually part of the driver copy on your PC. Removing the whole driver package deletes the broken copy and its records, so the next connection fetches a clean one from the host.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the failing printer if it is listed and select Remove.
- Press Win + R, type
printui /s /t2and press Enter. The Drivers tab of Print Server Properties opens. - Select the driver of your printer model and select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package and select OK, then Delete.
- If Windows says the driver is in use, restart the Print Spooler as in Fix 4 and try again.
- Restart the PC and add the printer again as in Fix 2.
Remove-PrinterDriver -Name "Exact driver name"The PowerShell line above does the same as steps 3 and 4 in Windows PowerShell (Admin). Copy the driver name exactly as the Drivers tab shows it. Any printer that still uses the driver must be removed first.

Every way to update, roll back or reinstall a driver: Update, roll back or reinstall a driver
It worked if: The driver is gone from the Drivers tab, and after the restart the printer connects and prints a test page.
If not: If the driver cannot be removed, go to Fix 4 and then Fix 5. If it is removed but the connection still fails, go to Fix 2.
Fix 2. Check the share on the host and add the printer by its exact path
5 to 10 minutesNo riskThe printer is shared by another PC or a print server. No administrator needed, except for the sharing switches.
A shared printer is reached by the path \\ComputerName\PrinterShareName, and the driver files are fetched through it. If sharing is off or the share name changed, Windows cannot reach the files it needs. Microsoft's guide for shared printers starts with exactly these checks.
- On the host PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer and select Printer properties.
- On the Sharing tab, tick Share this printer, note the Share name exactly, then select Apply and OK.
- On both PCs, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings and turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
- On your PC, open File Explorer, type
\\ComputerNamein the address bar and press Enter. The printer should be listed. - In Printers & scanners on your PC, select Add device, then Add manually when the printer is not listed.
- Choose Select a shared printer by name, enter
\\ComputerName\PrinterShareNameand follow the instructions.

On the host, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, then Manage > Printer properties. For sharing, open Settings > Network & internet > Status > Network and sharing center > Change advanced sharing settings and turn both switches on under Private. To add, select Add a printer or scanner, then The printer that I want isn't listed.
Microsoft says to use the same Microsoft account or local account on both PCs, or to enter the host's user name and password when asked. If \\ComputerName does not open by name, try the host's IP address, for example \\192.168.1.20. Network repair in general: Reset the network and flush DNS
It worked if: The host opens in File Explorer, the printer is added without the error and a test page prints.
If not: If the host opens but adding the printer fails with the same code, go to Fix 3. If an administrator account can add it, Fix 3 is the answer too.
Fix 3. Give your PC a driver it can use: install it as administrator or add it on the host
10 to 15 minutesLow riskA standard user gets the error and an administrator does not, or the host and your PC run different Windows editions. Needs an administrator.
Your PC can only copy a driver the host actually offers, and only an account that may install drivers can store it. If either is missing, the driver files never arrive and the connection stops at the file Windows expected to find.
- Sign in to your PC with an administrator account.
- Download the current driver for the printer model from the printer maker's website and install it.
- Add the printer as in Fix 2 while you are still signed in as administrator.
- Sign out, sign in with the standard account and add the printer by its share path again.
If you cannot install the driver on your PC, add it on the host instead. On the host's Sharing tab, select Additional Drivers, tick the processor type your PC uses (usually x64, or ARM64 on an Arm laptop) and point it to the maker's driver. Your PC then gets a driver that fits.
- At work: printer drivers are often managed by the IT department. Give them the exact message and the share path.
- Do not change Point and Print policies so that any user can install drivers. Ask an administrator to install the driver once instead.
- Running a maker's installer as administrator: How to run a program as administrator or in compatibility mode
It worked if: The standard account adds the printer without the error, and Printer properties opens normally.
If not: If the administrator gets error 0x00000002 too, go to Fix 4 and then Fix 5.
Fix 4. Restart the Print Spooler and empty its queue folder
3 minutesLow riskPrint jobs are stuck, a driver will not uninstall, or the error came after a crash. Needs an administrator.
The Print Spooler service loads every printer driver and keeps queued jobs in %WINDIR%\system32\spool\PRINTERS. A spooler that still holds a broken driver or a stuck job keeps the files locked, so removal and reconnection fail. A clean start releases them.
The files in the queue folder are documents waiting to print. They are deleted, so print them again afterwards. Printers, drivers and settings stay.
- Type services in the search box on the taskbar and open Services.
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
- Press Win + R, type
%WINDIR%\system32\spool\PRINTERSand press Enter. - Delete all files in the folder, but not the folder itself.
- In Services, right-click Print Spooler and select Start.
- Double-click Print Spooler, check that Startup type is Automatic and select OK.

The Services window in general: Check and restart Windows services
It worked if: The Print Spooler shows Running, the queue is empty and the driver can now be removed in Fix 1.
If not: Repeat Fix 1 now. If the error returns at once after a clean driver removal, go to Fix 5.
Fix 5. Delete leftover driver and print processor entries from the registry
15 minutesRead the warningFix 1 removed the driver, but the error returns at once. For confident users with an administrator account.
Some printer drivers leave their registry entry or a vendor print processor behind after removal. Windows then still looks for files of that driver, finds none and fails with error 2. Deleting only those leftovers lets the next connection start clean.
A wrong deletion can break printing for other printers. Export the keys before you change them: Back up the registry before editing it. Delete only entries that belong to the failing printer's maker, and never the winprint entry.
- Stop the Print Spooler as in Fix 4.
- Press Win + R, type
regeditand press Enter. - Open
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows x64\Drivers\Version-3. Use Version-4 if the driver is listed there. - Right-click the key with your printer's driver name, select Export to save it, then select Delete.
- Open
...\Environments\Windows x64\Print Processorsand delete the entries of that printer maker. Keep winprint. - In File Explorer, open
C:\Windows\System32\spool\prtprocs\x64and delete numbered subfolders there. Keepwinprint.dll. - Start the Print Spooler, restart the PC and add the printer again as in Fix 2.
It worked if: The printer installs with a fresh driver and the error does not return.
If not: If the connection still fails, use Fix 6 to add the printer through a local port.
Fix 6. Add the shared printer through a local port with its share path
10 minutesLow riskThe share opens in File Explorer but every normal connection fails. Needs an administrator.
A normal connection asks the host for its driver. A local port that points to \\ComputerName\PrinterShareName uses a driver installed on your own PC instead, so the step where the file goes missing is skipped. It is a workaround, but a lasting one.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and select Add device, then Add manually.
- Choose Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and select Next.
- Select Create a new port, choose Local Port as the type and select Next.
- Enter the port name
\\ComputerName\PrinterShareNameand select OK. - Pick the maker and model, or select Have Disk and point to the driver you downloaded.
- Give the printer a name and finish the wizard.
Open Command Prompt and run net view \\ComputerName. It lists every printer and folder the host shares, with the exact share names.
It worked if: The new printer shows in Printers & scanners and prints a test page over the network.
If not: If this fails too, the host or Windows itself is the problem: go to Fix 7.
Fix 7. Run the printer troubleshooter and install Windows updates on both PCs
10 to 30 minutesNo riskFix 1 to Fix 6 did not help, or more than one printer fails. Updates need an administrator.
The troubleshooter checks the Print Spooler and the printer setup and repairs what it can. Updates replace print components and in-box drivers, and a host with an old build can offer a driver your newer PC cannot use.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Select Run next to Printer and follow the questions. Newer builds may open the Get Help app for this.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered, including optional driver updates for the printer.
- Do the same on the host, then restart both PCs.

If an update will not install from Settings, fetch it by hand: Install an update from the Microsoft Update Catalog
It worked if: The troubleshooter reports a repair, or the printer connects after the restart.
If not: If the Print Spooler still stops or every printer fails, repair system files with Fix 8.
Fix 8. Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
15 to 30 minutesNo riskEvery printer fails, the spool folder will not open, or the Print Spooler keeps stopping. Needs an administrator.
The Print Spooler, the in-box print processor and the spool folders are part of Windows. If those files are damaged, any printer connection can report a missing file. DISM repairs the Windows image and SFC then restores the damaged files from it.
- Open an elevated command window. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin), or type cmd in the search box, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Select Yes when Windows asks for permission.

Search for cmd and choose Run as administrator. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Run DISM first. Type the command below and press Enter. DISM downloads clean copies of damaged components from Windows Update, so it can take several minutes. Wait until it says The operation completed successfully.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM /RestoreHealth running. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Run System File Checker. In the same window, type the command below and press Enter. Do not close the window until the verification reaches 100%.
sfc /scannow
sfc /scannow at 100%. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2. - Read the result and restart. Compare the last message with the table below this guide, then restart the PC so that repaired files are loaded.

The result line tells you what SFC did. Screenshot: Windows 11 26H2.
These steps were written for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. The full page with the other versions and what each result means: Run DISM and SFC to repair Windows system files
It worked if: SFC reports that it repaired files or found no problems, and the printer connects after a restart.
If not: Read the PrintService log as described under "If error 0x00000002 is still there".
If error 0x00000002 is still there: read the log
The message box does not say which file is missing. The print service often writes it in its own event log, together with the printer and the driver it was loading.
- Type event viewer in the search box on the taskbar and open Event Viewer.
- Open Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > PrintService.
- Select Admin and look for errors at the time of your last attempt.
- Right-click Operational, select Enable Log, try the printer once more and read the new entries.
| Test | Result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Add the same printer on another PC | It fails there too | The host or its driver is the problem. Update or reinstall the driver on the host. |
| Add the printer through a local port (Fix 6) | It works | The driver the host offers does not fit your PC: Fix 3 |
| Try with an administrator account | It works | Driver installation rights: Fix 3 |
- What to send to support or to the IT department: the exact message, the time, the printer model, the share path, both Windows versions and the PrintService events.
- When it is hardware: almost never with this code. Only if the printer also fails on the host itself, over USB, is the printer or its cable the problem.
- If even a new Windows user account fails, back up your files and consider a repair install that keeps them: Reinstall Windows without losing files
How to keep error 0x00000002 from coming back
- Remove printers in Printers & scanners and their drivers on the Drivers tab (
printui /s /t2). - Keep the host's name and the printer's share name the same once other PCs use them.
- Install the same current driver version on the host and the PCs that print to it.
- Install Windows updates on the host and on every PC that prints.
- Do not delete files in
spool\driversby hand. That creates the very missing file error 2 reports. - Do not use registry cleaners on a PC with printing trouble. They can remove keys the spooler needs.
- Do not loosen Point and Print security to let any user install drivers.
Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, so a Windows 10 PC gets no further fixes for its print components. If the error keeps returning there, moving to Windows 11 is the lasting fix.
Frequently asked questions
What is error 0x00000002?
It is Windows system error 2, ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND. Microsoft's text for it is "The system cannot find the file specified." With a printer it means that Windows looked for a file it needs to connect or print, usually part of the printer driver, and did not find it. The code does not say which file. Fix 1 removes the damaged driver copy, which is the most common cause, and Fix 2 checks the share it comes from.
Is 0x0000002, 0x000002 or 0x00002 the same as 0x00000002?
Yes. Windows writes the code with eight digits after 0x, but leading zeros do not change a number. So 0x0000002, 0x000002, 0x00002, 00000002 and error 2 are all "The system cannot find the file specified." What changes is where it appears. In a game, Windows Update or a blue screen such as "stop code 0x00002 1a", error 2 or a similar number has its own causes. This page covers printers.
Is "operation could not be completed error 0x00000002" the same problem?
It is the same code in a different window. "Operation failed with error 0x00000002" comes from the Connect to Printer box while you add a shared printer. "Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000002)" usually appears in Printer properties or when you print a test page with a printer that is already installed. In both cases a driver file is missing, so start with Fix 1 and remove the driver package.
Why does my laptop see the printer but cannot connect to it?
Seeing the printer only proves that the network and the host work. Connecting is a second step: Windows copies the driver from the host, stores it on your laptop and loads it. Error 0x00000002 means that second step failed on a missing file. That is why the reader's stable network in the question above does not help. Remove the old driver (Fix 1) and connect again by the share path (Fix 2).
Is error 0x00000002 the same as 0x0000011b?
No. Both appear in the same Connect to Printer box, but 0x0000011b is tied to security changes in the Print Spooler since 2021 and to how the host and your PC authenticate. 0x00000002 is about a missing file. If your message ends in 0x0000011b, the driver steps on this page may not help, and the fix belongs on the host. We cover other printer codes in separate guides, for example printer error 0x00000003.
What about "operation failed with error 0x00000012"?
That is a different code: 0x12 is error 18 in decimal, not error 2. It appears in the same Connect to Printer box, so it is easy to confuse the two when typing. The basic steps overlap: restart the Print Spooler, remove the old driver package and add the printer again by its share path. But the cause differs, so if your message shows 0x00000012, read the PrintService log as described above before you change the registry.
Does the error mean my printer is broken?
No. The code comes from Windows on your PC, before any page is sent to the printer. A printer with a hardware fault, a paper jam or empty ink shows its own messages on its panel and in the print queue. If the host PC prints to the same printer without trouble, the printer is fine and the fault is in the driver or the connection on your PC.
Do I need to delete anything in the registry?
Usually not. Fix 1 removes the driver and its records the supported way, and that is enough in most cases. The registry edit in Fix 5 is only for a driver that keeps coming back after removal. If you do it, back up the keys first, delete only the entries of the failing printer's maker and keep the winprint print processor, which every printer uses.
What does "ошибка 0х00000002 при подключении принтера" mean?
It is Russian for "error 0x00000002 when connecting a printer", the same error this page covers. The Russian version of Windows shows the same code in the Connect to Printer box, with the message in Russian. The causes and the fixes are the same: remove the printer's driver package with printui /s /t2, then add the printer again by its share path. The menu names on a Russian Windows differ, but the commands are identical.
Does error 0x00000002 appear on Windows 7 and Windows 10?
Yes. Users report it on Windows 7, Windows 10 and Windows 11, and on Windows Server print servers. The meaning is the same on all of them. The steps on this page are written for Windows 11 and Windows 10 22H2. Windows 7 has the same Services window, spool folder and printui command, but not the Settings pages. Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025.
