1. Press Win + I, select System > About and read Edition under Windows specifications. Go on only if it ends in N or KN.
2. On Windows 11 N, select Apps > Optional features, then View features next to Add an optional feature.
3. On Windows 10 N, select Apps > Apps and Features > Optional features > Add a feature.
4. Type Media Feature Pack in the search box, tick it and select Next and Install (on Windows 10, Install).
5. Wait until the feature shows as installed. Microsoft says you are not asked to restart, but you must restart to finish.
6. Restart the PC and start the game or program again.

• After installing: Microsoft also suggests Store apps such as VP9 Video Extensions, Web Media Extensions and HEIF Image Extensions for codecs in apps and the browser.
• Not in the list: the pack appears only on N and KN editions. If you do not see it on a regular edition, go to Fix 3.
• After a feature update: if the error came back after a big Windows update, open Optional features again and reinstall the pack if it is gone.

Fix 2. Add the Media Feature Pack with DISM when Settings does not offer it

The Media Feature Pack is a Windows capability, and DISM installs capabilities directly from Windows Update. This works when the Settings page will not show or install the pack.

1. Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Select Yes in User Account Control.
2. List the media capabilities and read the exact name and its State:

   dism /online /get-capabilities /format:table | findstr /i media

3. Install the pack. If the list showed a different name, use that one:

   DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Media.MediaFeaturePack~~~~0.0.1.0

4. Wait for The operation completed successfully, then restart the PC.
5. Start the program again.

Fix 3. Repair or reinstall the program the error window names

The window's title names the program that asked for the file. A damaged install, an old copy of a DLL inside the game folder, or an outdated audio manager can make the load fail even when Windows has a good copy.

Fix 4. Repair Windows' media files with DISM and SFC

ResampleDmo.dll is a Windows file, so Windows can rebuild it. DISM repairs the store that holds clean copies of system files, then System File Checker replaces damaged ones, the media files included.

1. Open an elevated command window. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin), or type cmd in the search box, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Select Yes when Windows asks for permission.
2. Run DISM first. Type the command below and press Enter. DISM downloads clean copies of damaged components from Windows Update, so it can take several minutes. Wait until it says The operation completed successfully.

   DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

3. Run System File Checker. In the same window, type the command below and press Enter. Do not close the window until the verification reaches 100%.

   sfc /scannow

4. Read the result and restart. Compare the last message with the table below this guide, then restart the PC so that repaired files are loaded.

Fix 5. Install Windows updates and update the audio driver

Updates bring fixed system files that DISM could not get from a damaged store. The audio driver and its manager are what call the resampler at startup on many PCs, so an old one can keep asking for a file in a way current Windows no longer supports.

1. Press Win + I, open Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install everything offered and restart.
2. Open Advanced options > Optional updates and install any audio driver offered there.
3. Right-click Start, open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.

Windows 10 left support on 14 October 2025. A Windows 10 PC no longer gets regular fixes, so if the error keeps coming back there, check whether the PC can move to Windows 11.

Fix 6. Find the startup app behind the pop-up with a clean boot

A clean boot starts Windows with only Microsoft services and no startup apps. If the window stops, one of the switched-off items calls the file, and turning them back on in halves shows which one.

1. Open System Configuration. Select Search on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
2. Hide Microsoft services. On the Services tab, select the Hide all Microsoft services check box. Only services from other companies stay in the list.
3. Disable the remaining services. Select Disable all, then select Apply.
4. Open Task Manager. On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
5. Disable the startup apps. On the Startup apps tab in Task Manager, select each item whose status is Enabled and select Disable. Write down or take a screenshot of the items you disable: you need the list to turn them back on.
6. Confirm the changes. Close Task Manager. On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK.
7. Restart and test. Restart the PC. Windows now starts in a clean boot environment: try again the thing that failed (run the app, install the update, uninstall the program).

Fix 7. Reinstall Windows and keep your files
