How to fix Microsoft Office error code 30015-44 in Windows?

Error Code: 30015-44 stops Microsoft 365 or Office while it installs or updates, usually with (3) in brackets, the Windows value for a path that was not found. Restart as the window asks, install again from your Microsoft account, and use the offline installer if it returns.

What Microsoft Office error code 30015-44 means

Every desktop Office sold today is installed by Click-to-Run, the engine that also updates, repairs and removes it. When a job fails, the setup window shows Something went wrong and a code. For 30015-44 the window also asks you to restart, which is not the case for every Office code.

The code has three parts. 30015 is a family of Click-to-Run setup failures that also includes 30015-4, 30015-6 and 30015-11. 44 is the step that failed, which Microsoft does not explain. The number in brackets is the most useful part: it is a Windows system error. In Microsoft's list of system error codes, 3 is ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND and 5 is ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED.

When error 30015-44 appears and what each bracket value tells you

The reports of this code are fewer than for other Office errors, and they fall into a few clear patterns. The table shows them with what we read from each one.

What causes Office error 30015-44, from the most common to the rare

Microsoft publishes no list of causes for 30015-44. The ranking below is our reading of the reports, the bracket values and Microsoft's advice for the closest documented code, 30015-4. It is an order of likelihood, not a statistic.

How to fix error code 30015-44 when you install or update Office

Fix 1 and Fix 2 are Microsoft's own steps for the closest documented code and solve the simple cases. Fix 3 and Fix 4 deal with an Office that is already on the PC. Fix 5 to Fix 8 look at Windows itself. Use the table to pick your start.

Fix 1. Restart the PC and install Office again from your Microsoft account

The window itself asks for a restart, and a restart is Microsoft's first option for 30015-4. It finishes pending Windows and Office jobs that hold files and folders, and a fresh setup file replaces one that may not have downloaded completely.

1. Save your work, close every program and restart with Start > Power > Restart. Do not use Shut down, which may not finish pending jobs when Fast Startup is on.
2. Open Settings > Windows Update (Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update). If updates wait for a restart, let them finish first.
3. Open a browser, sign in at m365.cloud.microsoft/apps with the account that owns Office, and select Install apps.
4. Delete the setup file you downloaded before, so you are sure to use the new one.
5. Right-click the new setup file and select Run as administrator. Confirm the User Account Control prompt.
6. Keep the PC online and on mains power until you see You're all set.

Fix 2. Install Office with the offline installer

Microsoft's second option for 30015-4. It says the offline installer may help bypass proxy, firewall, antivirus or internet connection issues during an installation. The whole Office is on the disk before setup starts, so a missing download path is no longer possible.

1. Open Microsoft's page Use the Office offline installer and choose the tab for your Office.
2. Sign in with the account that owns Office and open the installation page of the account.
3. In the Install window, choose Offline installer from the Choose a version list, pick the language and select Download.
4. Save the file to drive C or another drive with enough free space. For Microsoft 365 Family and Personal it is named O365HomePremRetail.img.
5. Double-click the file. Windows opens it as a new virtual drive.
6. Open the Office folder on that drive and run Setup64.exe for 64-bit Office or Setup32.exe for 32-bit Office.

Choose the same bitness as any Office, Visio or Project already on the PC. A mix of 32-bit and 64-bit products is refused by setup with its own error.

Fix 3. Repair the installed Office when 30015-44 appears on an update

An update uses the files and folders of the installed Office. When some of them are damaged or missing, the update cannot find what it expects. Quick Repair replaces damaged files without a download, and Online Repair installs a fresh copy over the old one.

1. Close all Office apps.
2. Right-click Start and select Installed apps (Windows 10: Apps and Features).
3. Find Microsoft 365 or your Office, select the three dots and select Modify.
4. Select Quick Repair, then Repair, and restart when it ends.
5. Run the update again from any Office app with File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
6. If it fails again, open the same window and choose Online Repair. It needs an internet connection the whole time.

Fix 4. Remove every Office with Microsoft's uninstall troubleshooter, then install again

30 to 45 minutesRead the warningYou reinstalled many times without success, an earlier or trial Office was on the PC, or Fix 3 failed.

A normal uninstall can leave folders, scheduled tasks and registry keys behind. When a new setup reads them, it looks for files that are no longer there, which fits a path not found value. The troubleshooter removes those traces as well.

1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
2. Open Microsoft's page Uninstall Microsoft 365 or Office from a PC and select the Uninstall button under the uninstall troubleshooter.
3. When the browser asks to open Get Help, select Open, and follow the prompts to remove every Office version it finds.
4. Restart the PC when you are asked to.
5. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and check that no Microsoft 365 or Office entry is left. Remove any that is with its three dots menu and Uninstall.
6. Restart again, then install Office with Fix 1 or Fix 2.

• Office 2024: Microsoft says the troubleshooter currently cannot uninstall it. Remove it in Installed apps instead. The steps for a manual removal are in our guide to error 30015-11, together with the Office registry keys to delete afterwards.
• Office that came with the PC: a Microsoft Store edition may still be installed. Remove it in an elevated PowerShell window with Get-AppxPackage -name "Microsoft.Office.Desktop" | Remove-AppxPackage. It does nothing to a normal Click-to-Run Office.

Fix 5. Check the folders Office setup needs: temporary folder, Program Files and free space

(3) means a path was not found and (5) means access to it was refused. Setup unpacks into your temporary folder and installs into C:\Program Files. If one of them is missing, redirected by a tool, locked or on a full drive, setup stops before or during copying.

1. Press Win + R, type %temp% and press Enter. A folder should open. If Windows says it cannot find it, write down the message.
2. Press Win + R again, type C:\Program Files and press Enter. It should open and list folders such as Common Files and Windows Defender.
3. Open File Explorer > This PC and check the free space on drive C. If it is nearly full, free some space first: Free up disk space and delete temporary files.
4. Right-click C:\Program Files, select Properties > Security and compare the list of groups and users with the one of C:\Program Files (x86). Both normally list SYSTEM, Administrators and Users.
5. If either folder is missing, its security list is nearly empty, or the temporary folder does not open, do not edit permissions by hand. Go to Fix 8, which restores Windows folders and their default permissions.
6. If all three checks pass, run setup again as an administrator.

One user on Microsoft Q&A with 30015-44 (5) had removed Office with Microsoft's tools, deleted its folders and registry keys, and tried 32-bit setup, all without success. A later answer in the thread found that the permissions of C:\Program Files had been removed, and adding back the missing groups and users fixed it. We report it as a user report: copying permissions by hand is easy to get wrong, so we point to a Windows repair instead.

Fix 6. Install in a clean boot and rule out security software

15 to 20 minutesLow riskThird party security, VPN or tuning software is installed, or the error stays after Fix 5.

Security programs and VPN clients can block or redirect the folders and connections setup uses. Microsoft names proxies, firewalls and antivirus as reasons for setup failures. A clean boot starts Windows without third party services, so one attempt shows whether one of them is to blame.

1. Disconnect any VPN and turn off a proxy you set up yourself.
2. Start Windows in a clean boot, with only Microsoft services and no startup apps: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
3. If your security program still runs, pause its real-time protection for this one attempt: Turn off Microsoft Defender protection for a moment.
4. Run Office setup as an administrator, or the offline installer from Fix 2.
5. Turn the protection back on as soon as setup ends, whatever the result.
6. Return Windows to a normal start with the last steps of the clean boot procedure.

Fix 7. Install Office from a new administrator account

15 minutesLow riskFix 1 to Fix 6 did not help and you want to know whether your user profile is the problem.

The temporary folder that setup unpacks into belongs to your user profile. A new account has a fresh profile and a fresh temporary folder. If setup works there, your own profile is damaged and Windows does not need a repair.

1. Create a new local account and make it an administrator: Create a new user account to test a problem.
2. Sign out and sign in to the new account.
3. Sign in at m365.cloud.microsoft/apps with the account that owns Office and select Install apps.
4. Run the setup file as an administrator and wait for You're all set.
5. Sign back in to your own account. Office is installed for the whole PC, so the apps appear there too.

Fix 8. Repair Windows while keeping your files

1 to 2 hoursRead the warningSystem folders or their permissions are damaged (Fix 5), or every fix above failed.

A repair installation puts back Windows' own folders and their default permissions without touching your files. It is the safe way to undo what a removed C:\Program Files permission or a broken system folder did, instead of changing permissions by hand.

1. First run DISM and SFC, which repair damaged system files in about 20 minutes: Run DISM and SFC to repair Windows system files.
2. If the error stays, on Windows 11 open Settings > System > Recovery and select Reinstall now next to Fix problems using Windows Update.
3. Let it finish and restart, then install Office with Fix 1 or Fix 2.
4. Only if it still fails, use Reset PC on the same page, choose Keep my files and Cloud download.
5. After the reset, let Windows Update finish before you install Office.

Every screen, and the Windows 10 route through Settings > Update & Security > Recovery: Reinstall Windows without losing files. Windows 10 left support on 14 October 2025, so a PC that still runs it is a good candidate for Windows 11 before you install a new Office.

If 30015-44 is still there: where the real cause is written

The window shows one line. Office setup writes the full story into log files, and with a path not found value the log usually names the missing path.

1. Run setup once more and note the time it fails.
2. Open %temp%, switch to Details view and sort by Date modified, newest first.
3. Open the newest log that starts with your PC name. It opens in Notepad.
4. Press Ctrl + F and search for 30015, then path not found, access denied and error.
5. Read the lines just before the first hit. A folder or file path there is what setup could not reach.

• What to send to Microsoft support: the full code with the brackets, whether it happened on install or on update, and your Office product and its bitness. Add the Windows version from Settings > System > About, and the newest log from both folders.
• A path on a drive other than C, or a network path, means a folder was redirected. Undo the redirect in the tool that set it, then install again.

How to avoid error 30015-44 the next time you install or update Office

Most cases start with a setup that ran while Windows was busy, or with system folders changed by a tool. Prevention means a clean start and leaving those folders at their defaults.

Is error code 30015-44 the same as 30015-11?

No. Both belong to the same family of setup failures, but they fail at different steps and for different reasons. The code 30015-11 usually comes with (3221225506), the Windows value for access denied. It stops close to the end, at 90 % or more, often because of a Windows service or licensing problem. 30015-44 usually comes with (3), a path that was not found, and appears earlier or during an update. I get error code 30045-44, 30068-44 or 30204-44. Does this page apply?

Only partly. These codes share the 44 but not the first number, and the first number names the failure. The code 30045-44 (1) means setup could not read the Office already on the PC. See error 30045-44. The code 30068-44 means the Office Click-to-Run Service could not do its job. See error 30068-44. The code 30204-44 comes from Office products that cannot share one PC, such as an older Visio next to a newer Office. See error 30204-44.

What does 30015-44 (5) mean, and why does setup stop at 0 %?

(5) is the Windows value for access denied. In the report we read, setup showed We're getting things ready, moved to the background at 0 % and then failed, so it never started copying. Uninstalling with Microsoft's tools, deleting Office folders and keys, turning off the firewall and trying 32-bit setup did not help that user. A later answer found that the permissions of C:\Program Files had been removed. Check that folder as in Fix 5 and, if its permissions look wrong, repair Windows with Fix 8 rather than editing them yourself.

Why does the error come back after I uninstall and reinstall Office many times?

Because a normal uninstall and a new download do not touch what is actually wrong. If the cause is leftovers of an older Office, a missing temporary folder, a redirected Program Files folder or a security program, setup meets it again every time. Use the uninstall troubleshooter instead of a normal removal (Fix 4), check the folders in Fix 5, and test once in a clean boot (Fix 6). Repeating the same reinstall only costs time.

Do I need to turn off the firewall or antivirus to fix 30015-44?

No, and you should not leave them off. Microsoft says the offline installer may help bypass proxy, firewall, antivirus or connection issues, so Fix 2 is the safer test. If you still suspect your security program, pause its real-time protection for one installation attempt and turn it on again right after (Fix 6). If Office installs only with protection paused, ask the program's maker for a documented exception. Turning off the Windows firewall for good is never a fix.

Will I lose my documents or mail if I remove Office to fix this?

No. Uninstalling Office removes the applications, not the files you created. Mail in a Microsoft 365, Outlook.com or Exchange account stays on the server. Your Office settings, such as recent files and custom templates, may be reset. A Windows repair with Reinstall now in Fix 8 keeps apps, files and settings, while Reset this PC with Keep my files keeps personal files but removes apps. Back up your files before Fix 8 and keep the account or product key of your Office at hand.

I searched in Spanish, Portuguese or Russian, for example "deu o mesmo erro" or "error_pa0015". Is this the right page?

For 30015-44 in any language, yes. The setup window is translated, but the code and the fixes are the same, and "deu o mesmo erro" (Portuguese for it gave the same error) usually means Fix 1 did not help: go on to Fix 2 and Fix 4. We could not confirm "error_pa0015" as an Office setup message. If you see it, it is not the 30015-44 window this page covers, so search for its exact text with the program that shows it.

Is there an official Microsoft fix or patch for 30015-44?

No. Microsoft's list of Office installation errors has pages for 30015-6 and for 30015-4 (1392) and 30015-1011 (1392), and it says not every error is listed.
