How to repair Microsoft 365 or Office
When Word, Excel, Outlook or another Office app crashes or will not start, the built-in repair replaces damaged program files. It repairs the whole Office suite at once.

Before you start
- Close and reopen the app first. Microsoft notes that a restart of the app sometimes fixes the problem.
- Save your work and close all Office apps before you start the repair.
Windows 11
Steps written for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2.
Open Installed apps
Right-click the Start button and select Installed apps.
Find Microsoft 365 or Office
Find your Microsoft 365 or Office product in the list. If you have a standalone app such as Visio or Project, search for it by its own name.
Open the repair window
Select the three dots next to the product and select Modify.
Start with Quick Repair
In the repair window, select Quick Repair, then Repair. It is the faster option: it finds damaged files and replaces them.
Finish and test
Follow the instructions on the screen until the repair is done. Restart the PC if you are asked to, then open the app that had the problem.
Run Online Repair if the problem is still there
Open the same repair window again and select Online Repair, then Repair. Microsoft recommends this option to make sure everything gets fixed. It takes longer than Quick Repair.
Windows 10
Steps written for Windows 10 22H2.

Open Apps and Features
Right-click the Start button and select Apps and Features.
Find Microsoft 365 or Office
Select your Microsoft 365 or Office product in the list. If you have a standalone app such as Visio or Project, search for it by its own name.
Open the repair window
Select Modify.
Start with Quick Repair

What each repair does

Each of them repairs the entire suite, even if only one app has the problem.
Start the repair from Control Panel
- Type control panel in the search box on the taskbar and select Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click your Microsoft 365 or Office product and select Repair or, if that is not available, Change.
- Choose Quick Repair or Online Repair as in the steps above.
If the repair does not help
Microsoft has retired the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant. Its place is taken by troubleshooters in the Get Help app. On Microsoft's page "Microsoft 365 troubleshooters" you can start, among others:
- the Microsoft 365 uninstall troubleshooter, which removes Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019 or Office 2016 completely;
- the Microsoft 365 setup troubleshooter, which installs it again;
- the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter and the Microsoft 365 sign-in troubleshooter.
Select Start under the troubleshooter you need, select Open when the browser asks whether the site may open Get Help, and follow the prompts. The troubleshooters need Windows 10 or later and must run on the PC that has the problem.
Removing Office does not delete documents you created with it. If other programs crash too, repair Windows itself: see Run DISM and SFC to repair Windows system files.
