Issue: How to restore deleted bookmarks in Google Chrome?

I’ve accidentally deleted bookmarks in Google Chrome. Maybe there’s a way to restore them? That would be great!

Solved Answer

Google Chrome is one of the most popular web browsers.[1] Functionality, performance, and security level made it stand out among its competitors. However, it still doesn’t have “restore bookmarks” button. However, it does not mean that it’s impossible to get back accidentally deleted bookmarks.[2]

Google Chrome creates backups of the bookmarks and overwrites them every time you open the browser. Thus, it allows recovering lost bookmarks. Below you can find the most common methods that help to restore bookmarks in Google Chrome. It doesn’t matter if you accidentally deleted them or lost them due to browser update, these methods should work.

Before trying our suggested methods, you should check your Google account[3] (of course, if you created it). In the Google account’s website, navigate to Google homepage and choose options in the top right corner. In the new page, scroll down until you see GO TO MY ACTIVITY link. Click on it and browse through your online activities. Hopefully, you will soon find the deleted bookmark. If it does not help, try methods presented below:

Method 1. Use backed up files

If you have exported backups before accidental deletion, you can access your backup folder with Google Chrome browser history and bookmarks. Thus, if you did that, follow these steps:

  1. Open Internet Explorer and type this path:
    C:\\User\\NAME\\AppData\\Local\\Google\\Chrome\\User Data\\Default

IMPORTANT: Change NAME with your Windows username.

  2. In the directory, you should find Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak files. One of them is the recent backup that was created when you opened the browser the last time.

Note. If you cannot find Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak files, you should access File Explorer and check the box near File name extensions (or uncheck the box near Hide extensions for unknown file types – it might differ based on the computer you use.)
  3. Make sure that Chrome is closed.
  4. Rename the Bookmarks file to Bookmakrs.1.
  5. Rename Bookmarks.bak file to Bookmarks.
  6. Open Google Chrome to check if the bookmarks are back.

Method 2. Use Chrome Bookmarks Recovery tool

Typically Google Chrome keeps backups of bookmarks in the profile folder. This backup file is called bookmarks.back and you need to find it. In order to do that, follow these steps:

  1. Copy this path in the File Explorer: C:\\Users\\%username%\\AppData\\Local\\Google\\Chrome\\User Data
  2. In the search bar, type Bookmarks and click Enter. After a couple of minutes, you will receive the list of your bookmarks or bookmarks.back file itself.

Note. In the list, you will see all Chrome user’s bookmarks. Thus, you may need to choose the bookmarks that belong to you manually.

  3. Select your bookmarks and drag and drop them to the box provided on this website
    Import bookmark files
  4. Once you receive the message saying “The download is ready,” click the link to download all the HTML files.
  5. Open each of the downloaded files with Google Chrome until you find your bookmarks. Most of the time it’s the biggest file.
  6. Once you find the bookmarks, click Chrome menu icon and access Bookmarks.
  7. From Bookmarks go to Bookmark Manager.
  8. Navigate to Organize and click Import bookmarks from HTML file.
  9. Upload the HTML file with your bookmarks.
  10. Once the upload is finished, your bookmarks should be brought back.

Method 3. Use DNS Cache

  1. Click Windows + R.
  2. Enter cmd and click OK.
    Run cmd command
  3. Open the Command Prompt.
  4. Type ipconfig /dislaydns.
  5. You will receive the list of recently visited websites where you can find the needed bookmark and add it back to Chrome.

Prevent websites, ISP, and other parties from tracking you

Private Internet Access is a VPN that can prevent your Internet Service Provider, the government, and third-parties from tracking your online and allow you to stay completely anonymous. The software provides dedicated servers for torrenting and streaming, ensuring optimal performance and not slowing you down. You can also bypass geo-restrictions and view such services as Netflix, BBC, Disney+, and other popular streaming services without limitations, regardless of where you are.

A VPN is also crucial when it comes to user privacy. Online trackers such as cookies can not only be used by social media platforms and other websites but also your Internet Service Provider and the government. Even if you apply the most secure settings via your web browser, you can still be tracked via apps that you are connected to the internet. Besides, privacy-focused browsers like Tor is are not an optimal choice due to diminished connection speed.

Therefore, to stay completely anonymous and prevent the ISP and the government from spying on you, you should employ Private Internet Access VPN. It will allow you to connect to the internet while being completely anonymous, prevent trackers, ads, as well as malicious content. Most importantly, you will prevent the illegal surveillance activities that NSA and other governmental institutions are performing behind your back.

Recover your lost files quickly

Unforeseen circumstances can happen at any time while using the computer: it can turn off due to a power cut, a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) can occur, or random Windows updates can decide to reboot the machine when you went away for a few minutes. As a result, your schoolwork, important documents, and other data might be lost.

Additionally, you might also be attacked by malware that can corrupt your Windows or encrypt files with a robust encryption algorithm, and ask for a ransom in Bitcoin for the decryption tool. Cybercriminals might not deliver what they promised, however, so it is better to attempt alternative file recovery methods that could help you to retrieve at least some portion of the lost data.

Data recovery software is one of the options that could help you recover your files. Once you delete a file, it does not vanish into thin air – it remains on your system as long as no new data is written on top of it. Data Recovery Pro is recovery software that searchers for working copies of deleted files within your hard drive. By using the tool, you can prevent loss of valuable documents, school work, personal pictures, and other crucial files.
