Issue: How to Enable Dark Mode Theme on Windows 10?
I was eagerly waiting for Windows 10 dark theme feature. I thought that it will be enabled automatically, but after the upgrade I found more or less the same Windows-typical theme. I assume that it has to be enabled manually, isn’t it? Could you please tell me with that?
As you probably already heard, Windows 10 Anniversary Update is deemed as one of the biggest OS updates released ever. It has touched various issues, including apps, software, settings, and, of course, design. Some of the newly built-in features were not justified, while the others were praised. It’s natural. However, one of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update feature was eagerly awaited by most of the Windows fans. That’s a Windows 10 dark theme also known as Dark Mode. Most of the users though that this theme will be activated automatically. For great disappointment, Windows left the traditional theme as default with the possibility to enable dark theme manually. If you don’t know how to do that, just follow the steps listed below.
How to enable dark theme on Windows 10?
NOTE: dark mode cannot be enabled on all devices running Windows 10. Until the next update, PCs, laptops, and tablet users can have that sleek dark theme.
Step 1. Enable Dark Theme for Windows 10 Settings and Apps
- Navigate to Settings – Personalization – Colors.
- Scroll down the window, find Choose your app mode, and select Dark.
- After that, you will see that most of the applications and settings app turned dark.
Step 2. Change Microsoft Edge theme
For some reason Microsoft engineers left Microsoft Edge color settings separated from the whole system. That’s why you have to enable it separately. To do that, you have to:
- Open Microsoft Edge and click on its menu (three dots at the upper right corner).
- Select Settings, locate Choose a theme, and select Dark.
Step 3. Change Microsoft Office theme
Just like with the Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Office dark theme has to be enabled manually as well. Therefore, do the following:
- Open any of the Microsoft Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Go to File and select Options.
- Find Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office and click on Office Theme.
- Finally, select Black. No matter that you change the settings on once Microsoft Office app, the option will be applied on all of them.
Step 4. Enable Dark Mode for Desktop Apps
- Right-click on Win key and select Control Panel.
- Navigate to Personalization – Change the Theme.
- Select the one of the high contrast themes, such as High Contrast Black.
Unfortunately, but software that is not related to Microsoft Windows have their separate themes, which is why you may see quite a lot of apps remaining white. If you really opt for sleek dark color everywhere, you can download themes for particular apps separately.
