Hi, KB5023008 doesn't install for me on Windows. I have tried several times since the update was released, but it simply doesn't work. Any idea what is going on and why is it failing?
Solved Answer
Windows Updates are software updates released by Microsoft for the Windows operating system. They are designed to address various issues, such as security vulnerabilities, bugs, and compatibility problems, as well as to deliver new features and improvements to the operating system.
Windows Updates are essential for the overall health of your computer and the security of your personal information. The updates address security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious software or hackers to gain access to your computer or steal your personal information. They also resolve compatibility issues with hardware and software, ensuring that your computer continues to run smoothly and efficiently.
Microsoft releases Windows Updates on a regular basis, typically on the second Tuesday of each month, known as “Patch Tuesday.” These updates are delivered automatically to computers running Windows via the Windows Update service or can be manually installed by the user.
KB5023008 is one of the updates that should have reached Insider Program participants on 2 February 2023. It addressed numerous Task Manager bugs and issues and also added a new policy for IT administrators to manage how the search box on the taskbar appears in the organization.
Unfortunately, users reported that KB5023008 failed to install for them, despite retrying the installation process and rebooting the system. Usually, the update goes through to a certain percentage and then stops, and fails either with an error code or without one, simply stating that updates failed.
While Preview updates such as KB5023008 are not mandatory, they are important for those who want to try out new Windows versions and see new features earlier, reporting to Microsoft with some valuable feedback. If this update did not install for you, there are several steps you can take to resolve this issue in Windows 11.
Solution 1: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
If you experience an issue with Windows updates, the first step you should take is to use the built-in troubleshooter. Although it may not always resolve the issue, it can help identify the problem.
To run the troubleshooter, follow these steps:
- Type Troubleshoot in the Windows search bar and hit Enter.
- Click Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and click Run.
- Wait for the scan to complete and apply the recommended fixes.
- Restart your PC.
Solution 2: Check for Corrupted System Files
To ensure that there are no corrupted files affecting the updates, you can run a check using Command Prompt.
Here's how:
- Type “cmd” in the Windows search bar.
- Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- When the User Account Control prompt appears, click Yes.
- Use the following commands, pressing Enter after each:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Restart your system and try updating again.
Solution 3: Restart Relevant Services
Updates depend on certain services running in the background to be successful. If these services are not running or malfunctioning, the update may fail. If the services are running, try restarting them:
- Type Services in the Windows search bar and press Enter.
- Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).
- If it's running, right-click and select Restart.
- If it's not running, double-click it, select Automatic in the Startup type drop-down menu, click Start, Apply, and OK.
- Repeat these steps with the Windows Update service.
Solution 4: Reset Windows Update Components
- Open Command Prompt (Admin).
- Use the following commands, pressing Enter after each:
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver - Press Win + E to open File Explorer
- Go to the following locations and delete the contents of these folders:
C:\Windows\System32\catroot2
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution - In Command Prompt, use the following commands:
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver - Reboot your system.
Solution 5. Disable or uninstall antivirus
Windows updates might fail because of third-party security software for several reasons. Security software such as antivirus and firewall programs are designed to protect your computer from threats and prevent unauthorized access to your system. However, during the installation of a Windows update, these security programs may interfere with the update process by blocking or slowing down the installation.
Additionally, the security software may not be compatible with the new update, leading to conflicts and causing the update to fail. In such cases, you may need to temporarily disable or remove the third-party security software, install the update, and then reinstall the security software. It is also recommended to check for updates in the security software and install them to ensure compatibility with the latest Windows update.
