Issue: How to Restore Mac to the Earlier Date?

Hello. I’ve been using my Mac for more than a year.  However, these days I’ve notice a significant slowdown and random freezes, which were not typical before. I know that it’s possible to restore the system to the previous state, but I’ve never did that in practice.

Could you please provide me a tutorial on this? Thank you in advance.

Solved Answer

Just like Windows, Mac OS can be restored to a previous date. Obviously, we perform various tasks on our Macs every day, including software downloading and system changes. Unfortunately, but each task influences Mac’s performance and, usually,  decreases it gradually.

Mac OS restore  is a great option in case your Mac gets slow, starts freezing or doubtful system errors start emerging. Luckily, it’s not difficult to restore Mac to the previous date due to the fact that it has a built-in back-up feature, which is known as Time Machine.

How to Restore Mac OS to the Previous Date?

Step 1. Set up Time Capsule

Time Machine on Macs is a great tool that allows creating backups of your files. However, to set up Time Capsule you will have to use an external driver, which has loads of free space because all data from your internal drive will be transmitted in it.

To set up Time Capsule, you have to connect an external hard drive, which is connected to a USB, Thunderbolt port or FireWire. By the way, the external hard drive, which is connected to the USB port of an AirPort Extreme base station on your network  also fits.

Once you connect an external hard drive to your Mac device directly, you may receive a confirmation window saying: “Do you want to use the drive to back up with the Time Machine?” Here you have to select Use a Backup Disk.

In case you want some extra security, you can select “Encrypt backup Disk” by which you will put a password on the created backups. Sometimes, connected hard drive doesn’t trigger confirmation window. In this case, you should perform the following steps:

  • Select Apple menu – System Preferences – Time Machine.
  • Select Backup Disk option.
  • Select an external hard drive that you attempt using (listed above) and click on Use Disk option.
  • To ensure security of your data, click Add or Remove Backup Disk

Step 2.  Back up data using Time Machine

Time Capsule setup automatically creates backups for the past 24 hours and daily backups for the previous month. In case you want to create backups right now, you have to select Back Up Now on the Time Machine menu.

Step 3. Restore Mac OS

As soon as you enable Time Capsule and create backups with Time Machine, it’s time to restore your system to the previous date. For this purpose, you have to launch OS X Recovery Tool. For that, do the following:

  • When you boot up your system or restart it, click Command key + R simultaneously to open OS X Recovery Tool.
  • Select Restore from Time Machine Backup.
  • If you have created more than one backup, select the one that has been created before your Mac errors occurred or before it got slow.
  • Finally, be patient and wait for the system to restore. This may take a while.

NOTE: If you don’t have a Time Capsule and can’t create backups, then the only solution to restore your Mac to the previous state is to reinstall it.

By the way, you can also try using a Mac optimization tool, for example, MacKeeper. This program has been developed for increasing Mac’s speed and overall performance, so if the problems that you encounter are not too big, optimization tool may be a great solution.
