Cumulative Update KB4090913 was supposed to fix USB connectivity issues caused by the KB4074588 security update

Probkems with Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4090913

Microsoft released a Cumulative Update KB4090913 for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update[1] which was supposed to fix issues with USB device connectivity. The company reported that installation of KB4074588 security update released on February 13, 2018, might stop mouse, keyboard or built-in laptop camera from working.

According to the company, problems with USB devices might occur because the update skips installation of the new drivers and uninstalls active drivers:

This issue occurs in the unlikely event, due to a race condition, that the Windows Update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.[2]

Microsoft also offered few tips to fix the problem until they released a Cumulative Update KB4090913 on March 5th which was supposed to solve USB device connectivity problems. However, the company still left some major mistakes, and instead of helping its customers, caused them more problems.

Installation of Cumulative Update KB4090913 brought more problems to Fall Creators Update users

Microsoft officially stated that Cumulative Update KB4090913 for Windows 10 version 1709 would fix USB device connectivity problems:

Addresses an issue in which some USB devices and onboard devices, such as a built-in laptop camera, keyboard, or mouse, stop working. This may occur when the Windows Update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.[3]

However, users who were waiting for this update reported about the inability to install it. According to the reports on forums, installation of the update ended up with the same old Windows update error which is followed by the error code: 0x80070643.

“We could not complete the update, reverting changes” [4]

The ones who managed to install the update cannot tell good things too. Their USB devices were still not working. What is worse, even more problems related to USB devices were reported.

Cumulative Update KB4090913 was supposed to fix “INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE” issue which prevented some machines from booting too. However, users reported that it did not. What is worse, more Windows 10 Fall Creators Update users were unable to start their computers after the installation of the update due to this boot error.

It seems that Microsoft engineers need to find and fix their mistakes again. However, the company hasn’t reported reasons that may have triggered the error. It’s also unknown when the problem will be solved.

Microsoft releases new updates on Patch Tuesday next week

The company presents non-security updates on the first Tuesday every month. Meanwhile, the second Tuesday of the month is known as Patch Tuesday.[5] On this day Microsoft releases security updates for Windows and other products.

Hopefully, the upcoming updates won’t cause more problems and just fix bugs and other security issues. Additionally, it is expected that some of the patches will solve problems caused by Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4090913.
